Reading Summary/Evaluation #2 In Stephen King's article "Why We Crave Watching Horror Movies," he gives us three reasons for why people crave watching horror movies. Where as in Nicholas Carr's article "Is Google Making Us Stupid," he argues how technology is negatively affecting our brains ability to concentrate and comprehend information it receives. According to Stephen King, the first reason he gives to why people crave watching horror movies is, "to show that we can, that we are not afraid, that we can ride the roller coaster." King sees that being able to sit bravely through a horror movie is similar to the way we dare to ride a roller coaster. (378). On the other hand, Nicholas Carr in his article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” starts by claiming that the Internet has negatively affected the human brain's ability to process and comprehend information. Carr illustrates his point by using a scene from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the supercomputer HAL’s memory is being …show more content…

Everyone can relate to horror movies because when watching some one in danger or die, we have fun and that is the reason why people watch horror movies, Argues King. He also adds that by watching horror movies people hide their true insanity and do not express it in real life. However Carr wraps his argument by explaining what people are losing when they make the Internet their main source of information. Carr claims that Google plans to replace our brains with supercomputers, and that by doing so, society would be better off. Carr emphasizes his argument by saying, " The human brain is just an outdated computer that needs a faster processor and a bigger hard drive." (413). Carr ends his article with returning to the scene he started with, 2001: A Space Odyssey. He states that humans will soon start operating and acting like machines when dealing with their emotions.
