Introduction
Steve Austin is an American retired professional wrestler, actor, producer, and television host with an estimated net worth of $30 Million.
Stone Cold won multiple WWF and WWE Championships throughout his professional wrestling career and was officially inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009. Although he earned a lot of money wrestling, his post-retirement TV and film career has been just as lucrative.
Before Wealth & Fame
Before his “Stone Cold” wrestling career, Austin attended Wharton County Junior College on a football scholarship, where he studied physical education. However, he was at one point considering joining the United States Navy instead of a college degree. After transferring to the University of North Texas, Austin quit the team and dropped out of college altogether to pursue his wrestling career.
As Steve began pursuing wrestling, he worked various manual labor jobs to support himself, including as a construction worker, forklift driver, and dockworker.
Wrestling Career
In 1989, Austin began paying $45 per session for training at Chris Adams’ wrestling school in Dallas. His first match took place that same year, using his real name, Steve Williams. However, a well-known wrestler of the same name already existed, and his name was changed to Steve Austin, since that’s where he’s from, to avoid confusion.
In the early 1990s, Austin began wrestling under the USWA in Memphis, Tennessee but was paid barely anything (reportedly as little as $20 per match). During that time, he often consumed plain raw potatoes as he couldn’t afford anything else.
Austin later transitioned to the WCW under the name “Stunning” Steve Austin, winning several championships, including the United States Heavyweight Championship, World Television Championship, and World Tag Team Championship. However, the promotion eventually fired him in 1995 after he suffered an injury.
WWF/WWE
That same year, Austin briefly signed with ECW before he was signed by the WWF (later renamed the WWE) in 1996. Under the promotion, Austin began searching for a new ring name and initially joined as “The Ringmaster.”
He didn’t like the name, and after watching a documentary on a serial killer named “The Ice Man,” he pitched the idea of a cold-blooded and ruthless character to the WWF. Austin didn’t like any of the names the promotion returned with, but when his wife used the British expression “stone cold” one day, he found his new name.
He began using the persona of a beer-drinking anti-hero and regularly began feuds with the likes of Vince McMahon, The Rock, Triple H, and The Undertaker. The feuds led to some of history’s most popular wrestling matches, cementing Austin as one of the promotion’s biggest stars. Stone Cold won several WWF/WWE championships and was officially inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.
Real Estate
Marina Del Rey Home
In July 2007, Stone Cold paid $1.965 million for a 2,724-square-foot, three-bedroom home in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles. He owned the property for almost fifteen years before putting it back on the market in 2021 for $3.595 million. After a month, it sold for $3.395 million.
Broken Skull Ranch 2.0
In 2017, Austin acquired a 40-acre ranch in Gardnerville, Nevada, for $2.9 million, named the Broken Skull Ranch 2.0 after selling his original ranch in Texas.
