Store-bought Egg Nog Is Still Really Disgusting: Taste Test - Oregon Live

Taste Test: Store-bought egg nog This week, I somehow made it through trying four brands of store-bought egg nog, my least favorite holiday drink of all time.

For the record, I hate store-bought egg nog.

It's goopy, cloyingly sweet, smells like bubble gum and is, in my opinion, the least enjoyable of all the holiday beverages. Maybe of all time.

Now, this has nothing to do with homemade versions, particularly those spiked with a little rum or brandy, which are more akin to drinking creme anglaise (think melted vanilla ice cream) and are actually good.

This year, I thought, "Maybe my disdain for the store-bought egg nog was all in my head. Maybe I just had one bad egg nog and it ruined it for all the other ones." I even mildly remember a time when I did drink it.So I gave not one, but four different egg nogs -- Alpenrose, an organic brand, a glass bottle from Garry's Meadow, a local dairy producer, and "Holiday Nog" from Silk -- a try.I was surprised by a few, both in good and bad ways.I was immediately disgusted pouring the Alpenrose ($2.69, Fred Meyer) nog out of the carton. It was very gelatinous and took me back to the moment when I realized that egg nog was basically cold snot mixed with sugar. But surprisingly, it didn't taste as awful as it looked. The organic brand from Organic Valley ($3.69, Fred Meyer) was my reprieve from the yellowed, goopy liquids I was drinking, probably because it tasted like milk with spices more than minty eggs. I would drink this one. I was most looking forward to the Garry's Meadow egg nog ($5.79 + $2 bottle deposit, New Seasons). I buy and drink their milk and creams regularly and they are fantastic. But sadly, theirs was my least favorite of the quartet. While the smell wasn't standoffish and the glass bottle allowed you to see the spices inside the nog, it was just terrible; something between mint jelly and Double Bubble liquified and dyed yellow. The "Holiday Nog" from Silk ($2.50, Fred Meyer) I wrongly anticipated to be worst. It was actually among my favorite (ha!) because it didn't have the same qualities of egg nog that I despise (too thick, overly sweet).

Watch the video above for my full thoughts and grimaces.

How do you feel about egg nog? I'll meet you in the comments.
