22 Apr, 2017 @ 12:31pm Dev made a good atmosphere and amnesia and outlast , you know what is out there. In subnautica you do not know, it is the deep dark full of scarry thing. #1

22 Apr, 2017 @ 1:17pm Because in Amnesia you're in a castle, and in Outlast you're in an old asylum. What do they have in common? Exactly! Built by, and for, humans. The deep blue sea wasn't built for humans. You're out of your element, you're slow in comparison to the predators, you can't see very far, and you don't know what is out there. It all adds up to make it a terrifying experience for the human mind.I'm personally looking forward to the day they make at least a mod where the monster sounds are removed so a Reaper Leviathan can sneak up on you like a proper predator. That's when brix will be shat. ;) #2

22 Apr, 2017 @ 3:34pm Personally I've found SOMA (Also by Fractional) to be the scariest. I think just being at the bottom of the ocean feeling like the pressure could crush you at any minute while giant creatures come out of the blackness is good nightmare stuff. #3

22 Apr, 2017 @ 4:21pm Instinctual fear. We left the ocean aons ago and we don't belong there anymore. In it (without technology) we are slow, we drown and can't fight well at all. Add the fact that we don't know everything in it and that you can't see far and you have a nightmare recipe. The fact that this is an alien world where you know NOTHING about it is just the icing on top.Deep down we know that every living thing in the ocean has an advantage to us, its the same reason dark woods at night can be scary, only the ocean is much more so. You feel like you could be jumped from a predator from virtually any angle at any time. Your imagination is your worst enemy at that point.Amnesia and games like it are scary because it wreaks havoc with our mind, constantly trying to put you on edge. Subnautica does this with its environment alone, but is a fundamentally different experience. Last edited by Firewalk; 22 Apr, 2017 @ 4:21pm #4

30 Jun, 2017 @ 12:06pm I think a big part of it is that you can't really fight back, at least with the technology I have (a propulsion gun and a knife). That gives it a similar helpless feeling that games like Resident Evil have. Reapers and Sandsharks are pretty scary. But overall, I personally don't find the environment scary - you've got plenty of technology to help you out, everything is bright and colorful, although the music sometimes gets a little foreboding. The most scared I get is when I have to venture outside my Seamoth for some research/scrap metal that's being guarded by something, really puts me on edge but I always save beforehand like a pansy. #6

30 Jun, 2017 @ 12:30pm For me another thing that adds to it is that there aren't just four directions enemies can come from. You're vulnerable from every angle. Add that to limited sight distance, no real weapons, and very strong enemies, and early game especially is pants-poopingly frightening sometimes. Once you've got a vehicle it's a bit better, but even so, you're still not completely safe.I've always been a little scared of the ocean/great lakes, so this game feeds into that fear perfectly for me. I don't think I'll ever jump off a boat into the middle of Lake Michigan again. If I can't see shore, I'm not effing doing it lol. Last edited by SJane; 30 Jun, 2017 @ 12:31pm #7

30 Jun, 2017 @ 4:35pm Ive grown accustomed to most things in this game now but there are 2 things that still get me every time. When a bleeder appears on my arm out of nowhere and the quick race of adrenaline and the feeling of no no NO NO when I see a reaper and have to dance around it praying not to get savaged #8

30 Jun, 2017 @ 4:39pm The game scares me, too. I'm the kind of person who gets immersed in the games I play, focussing all my attention on what I'm doing. I've never liked underwater levels in any first person game I've played. I think it may be the limited visibility and sound range. You just never know when something is close and when and where it's going to jump out at you. Even the terrain and textures suddenly popping in can make me jump just a little. The first reefback I saw scared the crap out of me.Yeah, I'm a big coward, I know. #9

30 Jun, 2017 @ 5:12pm Limited sight range does it the most for me. The bioluminescent areas of the [redacted] and the areas below that that are even brighter aren't half as terrifying as poking about the crash zone at night. Even if there's bigger things down there, because I can *see* them.... also I know Reapers exist at all now, which was an advantage I didn't have the first time I poked around there. 30 Jun, 2017 @ 5:56pm Because most horror games don't restrict you to the sea, on an alien planet, alone, ravaged by disease. #14

Was exploring the and a ♥♥♥♥ing huge thing started screaming man i freaked out insta presset alt f4Lol i was coming on here to say the same thing, as I'm sure many people think the same. I pretty much have a very hard time playing it as well, and when I have been floating in "deep / open water" is also a very terrifying experience. I have only done so on coasts and in large lakes, not deep sea diving but I think if I were to see anything huge would be a terrifying but respectful / humbling experience. But I think there is a pretty common fear of the unknown under water etc..

I haven't played the game since it went to a night-time setting. I logged in a few times hoping the game had some kind of background clock and it would have progressed to another daytime section but it appears it only progresses as you play. I was already pretty spooked in the daytime but the night time freaks me the ♥♥♥♥ out big time. Maybe I can get someone else to play it until it is daylight in-game again lol... It seems like an awesome game, too, but it's much like if there were some amazing game about snakes or something I would have nothing to do with that either, lol... #12

Originally posted by kwong20287:MY HERO!But, the real question.. does it come with a night light? Just kidding, that's good to know and will probably get me interested in the game again until I (maybe??) get used to its enemies etc. Just hearing them lurking around in the water is very scary too.... #15 < > Showing 1-15 of 57 comments Per page: 1530 50 Subnautica > General Gameplay Discussion > Topic Details Date Posted: 22 Apr, 2017 @ 12:00pmPosts: 57Originally posted by KeinScheisse:lol, no no... well, unless we are both cowards (okay maybe that's possible...)
