Super glue and baking soda for quick gap repairs?

I was surprised to hear of a gap-filling repair technique that uses a combination of super glue and baking soda.

That is: ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (or similar) and sodium bicarbonate.

Apparently, the baking soda is not just a passive filler, but quickly provides ions that the glue needs to harden – see this page for the chemistry.

The method is to fill the gap to be repaired with baking powder, then drip on runny super glue. It is solid within a minute.
