It was announced back on May that the CW would not be progressing with Supernatural spin-off series, Wayward Sisters.

Wayward Sisters was a backdoor pilot that aired as the 10 the episode in the 13 season of Supernatural earlier this year.

The all-female episode proved extremely popular, prompting calls for it to be given its own independent show.

Fans were eagerly waiting for a full series to be commissioned but it sadly wasn’t to be.

Why as Wayward Sisters Cancelled?

Speaking at the Television Press Tour in LA this week, president Mark Pedowitz commented on the decision.

“We were very happy with the women who were in the Wayward Sisters spinoff,” Pedowitz said.

“We have a certain number of slots this year. It just did not get there. Supernatural may be Jensen and Jared — and there may not be a franchise beyond that.”

He added: “If there’s a great idea that [the producers] want to go forward with, we’re open to listening. It is a great franchise.”

Wayward Sisters follows Sheriff Jody Mills (played by Kim Rhodes), Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster) and a group of troubled young women, all of them orphaned by supernatural tragedy.

This October sees the release of a Charmed reboot.

The series is also a female-led supernatural drama and although it is completely separate to the Supernatural universe, perhaps networks bosses though the two shows would be too similar thematically.

There has been widespread disappointment from fans and cast members alike.

Rhodes tweeted: “We will not lose the community nor the voice we have made... This just hurts. It won't always.”

Her co-star Buckmaster also tweeted:”We’ve still got work to do.”

A petition Save Wayward Sisters on Change.org has already amassed over 82,000 signatures.

Fans are remaining hopefully however.

Popular series Lucifer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Expanse were all cancelled and subsequently saved by different networks following their cancellations this year.

Dedicated fans orchestrated huge social media campaigns which resulted in the series being saved.

So all hope is not lost for the Wayward Sisters yet.

When is Supernatural season 14 released?

The 14th outing of the long-running series is due for release on October 11 on the CW.

Episodes will also air on Channel 4’s E4 in the UK.

There will be 23 episodes in total.

Both Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles will be back as Sam and Dean Winchester.
