Sweet Tooth Season 2 On Netflix Release Date And More - Digital Spy

Sweet Tooth spoilers follow.

Although the world of Sweet Tooth is post-apocalyptic in nature, we hope the end of days never comes for this show. Netflix's latest comic book adaptation happens to be one of the best originals it's produced in some time, and with that final cliffhanger looming over us, it's vital that Sweet Tooth comes back for a second season.

Thankfully, Netflix has now confirmed that the future is indeed looking bright for this post-apocalyptic show with an official season two renewal.

This delectable news was tweeted in a video announcement by showrunner Jim Mickle who said: "Hope you saved room for more? #SweetTooth."

"It's been equally thrilling and heartwarming to experience how people around the world have been falling in love with our deer-boy," says Mickle. "We couldn't be more excited to continue our collaboration with Netflix and keep following Gus and his friends on their extraordinary journey."

So what's next for Gus? Did hybrids really cause the virus? And will Abbot ever take off those damn glasses? Here's everything we know about Sweet Tooth season two on Netflix.

Netflix and the Sweet Tooth producers kept quiet about season two for quite some time, but we always figured that there was a plan in place given how season one ended. What we've seen so far only covers less than a third of the source material, so don't be surprised if Sweet Tooth carries on for not just one, but at least two more seasons.

With all that in mind, don't expect new episodes until late 2022 at the very earliest. Sweet Tooth is big-budget fare, so the post-production process is more time-consuming than it usually is with your average real-life drama.

It'll be worth the wait, though. In a recent report, Netflix revealed that Sweet Tooth's first season was watched by 60 million households, placing the series at number six on their list of most watched English-language shows. That puts Gus just behind The Queen's Gambit at 62 million and just ahead of Emily in Paris at 58 million.

Shooting on season 2 is scheduled to start in January 2022, and it looks like the show will return to Auckland, New Zealand to film all eight episodes of the next instalment.

Sweet Tooth season 2 cast: Who will be in it?

Unless The Crumble happens for real, expect to see all of the following cast members return for Sweet Tooth season two, including:

• Christian Convery as Gus• Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd• Adeel Akhtar as Dr Singh• Will Forte as Gus' father• Dania Ramirez as Aimee• Neil Sandilands as General Steven Abbot• Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear

One cast member who we won't "see" but who will return is narrator James Brolin, the father of Josh Brolin (AKA Thanos).

After the release of season 1, Brolin talked to Looper about how executive producer Robert Downey Jr had offered the 81-year-old actor his first major voice over role in Sweet Tooth.

"I've known him [Downey Jr] for years. He's come from here and there and done some absolutely beautiful work over the years. The early movies of his are just wonderful to re-see. And we've been friends for a while. And we are neighbours. That's most of it and we had lunch one day and then Susan, his wife, is delightful and an effective go-getter producer," he said.

"And they had this project before COVID. So it's just incidental that it's about a virus. I got a call months later ... He didn't call me directly. It's, 'We got a call from Robert, he wants you to narrate, they both do.' And that's it. You have no choice. And I went, 'okay'. So I called my rep. I said, 'What do you think of this?' And they said, 'Well, you know, you've been auditioning for voice stuff forever. Never got anything, why not try it?' And I said, 'Yeah, that's what I was thinking.'"

"And already, consequently, even before it opened, word got around that I was narrating and I think there was some voiceover in the trailer. And so I've got a big animated movie to do next and it's all kind of snowballing. It's crazy. You never know."

New characters will be joining the series too, and while Netflix is saying little, a casting call sent out in New Zealand in September gave a hint of at least one possible addition to the cast.

The National Foundation for Deaf & Hard of Hearing posted that the Sweet Tooth team were "looking for talented kids who may be deaf, hearing impaired HOH and kids versed in NZSL sign language".

The casting call went on to explain they were looking for kids of approximately 9 years old, and that the role would require facial prosthetics and make up (well, of course) and that actors who were transgender or non-binary were strongly encouraged to apply.

There have also been unconfirmed reports that the Sweet Tooth team are casting around for young kids to play characters called Finn Fox, Wally Walrus, Haley Mockingbird and JoJo Cat, but it is possible those are just rumours, especially as none of the character names appear in the original comics.

We do know, however, that Criminal Minds writer Oanh Ly will join season two in the role of co-executive producer.

Everything comes together in the final episode of season one, but things aren't looking so good for our loveable heroes.

Abbot finally managed to take over the Preserve and also capture Gus, which means that he now has plenty of hybrids for Singh to experiment on in the hope of finding a cure. The children are now together, but it's only a matter of time before they're dissected too.

Thankfully, Jepperd and Aimee are teaming up to break into the lab and save their children. "Heal up. Tomorrow we get our kids back," she says. Will they be successful? As fans of the comics already know, there's plenty more story to tell, although that doesn't mean everyone will make it out of season two alive.

And then there's also the matter of Gus's "dead" mother to deal with. At the very end of season one's finale, Bear manages to make contact with her via radio. It turns out that she's in Alaska, which might very well be where the virus began.

Is Gus's mother looking for a cure? Most likely. But it remains to be seen whether the show will follow this scientific path or expand into something more spiritual and religious like the comics. Either way, Alaska is a key location in the source material, so we expect it to play a more prominent role in season two as well.

Sweet Tooth season 2 trailer: When can we see a Netflix promo?

Without Gus's enhanced senses, it's tricky to look ahead and figure out when new footage will arrive. If we had to guess, late-2022 is probably your best bet right now, perhaps a month or so before Sweet Tooth season two arrives on Netflix.

Sweet Tooth is now available to watch on Netflix.
