"Tarantula Spiders as Pets" by Lolly Brown takes a closer look at what it means to keep these exotic creatures as pets. With the steady increase of the popularity of exotic pets all across the world, this star of the spider world was not to be left behind. Many people considering caring for these so called "low maintenance pets" may be wondering whether this is something they can realistically do. This book brings together much of the current information regarding tarantula keeping, habitat, diet, handling, husbandry, health conditions, and breeding. We also look at the more practical aspects of tarantula keeping such as costs, licenses, and basic husbandry. If you are like many others who have always had a deep fascination for these amazing creatures, and yet wondered if you are capable of actually caring for one, then this book is for you. The journey of bringing a tarantula home is also a journey of getting to know another side of the natural world. 1.0 out of 5 stars A terrible book. Your tarantula deserves much better.
Reviewed in the United States on 24 August 2017Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase Do not buy this book. The author did not do her research, and many parts of the book are completely WRONG.So let me explain. I've owned tarantulas for maybe 25 years now. There aren't many tarantula care books, so I was excited when I saw this one come out. Excited until I started reading it. The book starts out "Tarantulas are predatory, venomous, dangerous, territorial....." Hmmm "venomous and dangerous." Really, so hundreds, perhaps thousands of people must die from them every year? This is plainly NOT TRUE.A few pages the book says this "Some people can have a strong allergic reaction to the tarantula venom, and some species have venom that can be fatal to humans." As pointed out in other books, this is 100% FALSE.On the chapter on "feeding" the book says that you never have to "worry about overfeeding." Again NOT TRUE. Tarantulas in captivity will almost always overeat if given the opportunity. I guess I could go on and on about everything that is incorrect on almost every page, but you get the picture. This book is very inaccurate in some places and flat-out WRONG in many others. For the happiness of your pet tarantula, do not buy this book.Instead buy "The Tarantula Keeper's Guide" by Schultz & Schulz. This book is about 8 years old, and could be written in a more organized way, but at least it is highly accurate. Hopefully the authors will update it soon, but in any case, its still 10,000 times better than this book. Read more Report

1.0 out of 5 stars Such a dissapointment!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 May 2017Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase Never buy a book online without knowing more about it... thought i was getting a decent guide to Tarantulas and which were better as pets. After losing a previous book in a house move i presumed this would be similar, but no, i was so dissapointed there were no colour pictures of the spiders, let alone more than the so called top ten Tarantulas featured. If someone wants this book off me, then just get in touch and pay only for the postage!
