Teen Wolf: The Movie: How Did Allison Come Back From The Dead?

In September 2011, MTV’s werewolf drama Teen Wolf premiered and began its six-year reign over the network. The series was a dark spinoff to the 1985 Micheal J. Fox classic of the same name. Following the popularity and success that The Vampire Diaries garnered on The CW, MTV followed the same thread with Teen Wolf until the finale in 2017. Tyler Posey, who played the hero and series lead Scott McCall, has been vocal over the years in his desire to reboot the series. In 2021, Posey got his wish, and it was announced that Paramount+ would be reviving the series into Teen Wolf: The Movie.

As casting lists and information about the movie began to appear on the internet, fans were shocked that Crystal Reed will return to her role as Allison Argent. In the season three finale, Allison was killed in battle against the Oni, a supernatural group of Japanese demons, and never reprised her role in seasons that followed. How will the film explain her absence, and why she was never mentioned before?

The Magic of Wolfsbane

Aconitum, best known as wolfsbane and monkhood, has been long regarded as a staple in werewolf lore for decades. According to the Chicago Botanic Garden, the plant is both beautiful and poisonous, and the ingestion of it is fatal. Throughout movies and mythology, wolfsbane serves as being both lethal to werewolves and is often associated with the supernatural. It is no surprise that this plant would be a core instrument in Teen Wolf's plot, having been used countless times in the Argent Family's arrows and amongst the werewolves themselves. In the first season, Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) plants wolfsbane on his sister's grave to keep her in wolf form, rather than expose her true identity. From this point forward, wolfsbane became such a regular occurrence in the series that it may as well have been a character itself. Any television series that involves the supernatural always inherits the luxury of being able to bend certain rules regarding life and death. In the season three finale episode titled "Insatiable," Allison Argent (Crystal Reed) is killed in combat by one of the Oni demons, and died in the arms of Scott McCall (Posey). Her death was a turning point in the series, and a significant burden that Scott would now hold for the rest of his life.

However, for the first time since 2017, Teen Wolf had their own panel at San Diego Comic Con and the trailer, which can be viewed on YouTube, for Teen Wolf: The Movie was released. Fans knew that Reed would be reprising her role as Allison, yet there is some confusion around how her sudden resurgence would be explained. One of the ways that the show's writer Jeff Davis may work around this is using wolfsbane. Allison, although human, could have been buried with a species of wolfsbane that would allow her body to stay preserved much like Derek's sister in season one.

Return of the Nogitsune

The return of Allison Argent wasn't the only reveal that the Teen Wolf: The Movie trailer teased, but also alluded to the return of the very thing that caused her death. The Nogitsune was the main antagonist of season three, and notably the most terrifying creature in the series as a whole. The creature is based on the Japanese myth of the kitsune, but voided, meaning that this spirit thrives on chaos and pain. Teen Wolf's Nogitsune used the beloved character Stiles (Dylan O'Brien) to enter the real world by possessing his mind and then his body. The pack banded together to save Stiles from this spirit, eventually splitting them into two different beings. Once Stiles' mind was freed from the Nogitsune, the creature took his form and thus Void Stiles came into play. As it is revealed in the trailer that the Nogitsune has returned to Beacon Hills, it leaves open the potential idea that Allison's body is actually being possessed by the creature himself. If this is true, the limitations of the Nogitsune will be uncapped being that he has possessed a dead body and will be that much harder to stop. Teen Wolf: The Movie is expected to release for streaming on Paramount+ in October 2022.
