I BECAME SERIOUS ABOUT THIS HOBBY when I first time visited the United Kingdom in November 2003. The trip was a short holiday break while I was pursuing my research program at the University of Queensland (Australia). I stayed in my friend's place in Kettering (eastern side of London, one hour by train) for few days before I proceeded to Finland and Sweden to visit my friend who was by then completing his PhD program.While in Kettering (UK), I explored the town especially the shopping area and visited some bargain stores, including charity shops. I was surprised to find beer mats neatly packed (50 pieces) in the Cancer Research Foundation shop for just 4.00 Sterling pounds. Without hesitation, I only bought one pack after several minutes of comparing the other pack after finding out that there was no big difference on the design of coasters inside each plastic pack. In other words, they are completely identical.In the early stage of my fascination with these paper products, visiting restaurants for fine dining and bars is a delight for me, even though I am not a beer drinker. Well, I can manage at least 3 San Miguel bottles per night during special occasions. Not more than that, otherwise I will not find my way home and I will be found in somebody's bed! To date, my alcohol consumption is negligible not because of the tolerance alcohol intake level being implemented in the country.

Generally, like collecting coins and stamps, Tegestology is not only a practice of collecting beer mats or coasters, but in my own experience, it provides relevant fact or information about the product itself. Since these are used mainly for beer advertisement, it is worth discovering the company behind the making of these beers. Nowadays, beer mats are being used for political campaign or any product launching.

While browsing the internet, only few links available to provide information about trading and selling of these collectible items. I also found out that the smallest beer mat is measured not more than one inch in diameter! This is also a popular hobby in Germany since 1958 with an international collector's association named IBV. "Bierdeckel" is the German term for beermats.

So far, I have already collected almost 800 pieces of assorted designs and brought here in the Philippines.

My location from 2005 to 2011 was the best place to collect beer mats since Belfast (Northern Ireland) has an excellent reputation for bistros and bars. Having Irish friends who are bars' enthusiasts, it is easy for me to collect these things. For example, Guinness is the Irish golden beer and the brewery provides regular supply to the bar establishments. My collections are mostly Guinness design which some of them were bought from the souvenir shops, especially the old collectible ones. So far, I have already collected almost 800 pieces of assorted designs and brought here in the Philippines.
