Tekken 7 is a 3D fighting game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game is the ninth installment in the Tekken series, and the first to make use of the Unreal Engine. Initially tested in arcades through 2014, the game first had a proper arcade release in Japan in August 2015 which was followed by an updated version (Fated Retribution) in July 2016 which featured new content such as stages, costumes, items and characters. The home versions for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released worldwide in June 2017.
Tekken 7 saw substantial growth over its prime lifespan as a premiere competitive fighting game across global tournaments. New additions such as a slow motion zoom during close-calls between moves, rage system changes to give new comeback tools to characters low on life, and prominent guest characters from across the fighting game world and beyond engaged spectators and new Tekken fans while the core of the series' gameplay and compelling competitive storylines brought new life to one of the FGC's most storied franchises. Prominent storylines that developed between the game's initial arcade tests and its final Tekken World Tour appearance in January 2024 include the rise of the Pakistani fighting game community to global recognition, Rangchu's Tekken World Tour 2018 win with the historically weak character Panda, and the continued growth of the title as a headliner at fighting game majors like EVO where it made the main stage at every offline EVO event from 2015 to 2023.
The game eventually overtook Tekken 3 as the highest selling entry in the franchise and saw significant post-launch support in the form of DLC and continuous balance changes over the course of 5 major patches and their following updates, considered as different seasons. Tekken 7 and all its DLC can currently be purchased for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X/S.
