Temporary licence plate sticker

How to get a temporary licence plate sticker for your snow vehicle and/or company vehicle. It will let you drive a vehicle for 10 days while you complete the requirements for a regular licence plate sticker.

Overview

If your vehicle is registered in Ontario and you are planning to complete the requirements for a licence plate sticker, you can apply for a temporary licence plate sticker in order to drive your vehicle to a garage (for example, to get a safety standards certificate) and for other necessary short-term transportation purposes.

The temporary licence plate sticker must be attached to the upper right hand corner of your licence plate and will be valid for 10 days starting with the date issued.

A limit of 2 temporary licence plate stickers can be purchased per vehicle identification number and registrant identification number combination within a 365 day period. An additional “T” valtag will not be issued for the vehicle unless regular validation has been purchased for that vehicle first.

Temporary licence plate stickers cannot be renewed online.

Get a temporary licence plate sticker

To get a temporary licence plate sticker visit ServiceOntario and bring:

• the vehicle permit indicating that the vehicle’s status is "FIT" or “TMP”
  • if the vehicle is not yet registered in your name, the back of the permit must be completed and signed by the current registered owner
• proof of insurance that includes the name of your insurance company and the policy number for the vehicle
• if the vehicle is being registered in your name and you wish to attach your own plates bring the existing licence plates (if available) along with the plate portion of the vehicle permit
• if you are registering a vehicle for the first time, you must pay the fees for vehicle registration and the purchase of licence plates including applicable taxes

You must also pay all outstanding fees, including unpaid highway tolls, unpaid parking fines and not sufficient funds (NSFs) before receiving a temporary sticker.
