Un bacione al mio tesoro / per il mio tesoro The position of the possessive adjective is in no way influenced by the phonetic sequence. As already said above, the afterwards position in innatural, and it is therefore intentionally used in order to emphasize this ownership It is mainly used in exclamations, when addressing the "owned" one: Mamma mia Figlio mio Gesù mio / Dio mio Amore mio Tesoro mio Amico mio Bello mio E

Italian and Spanish, living in Chile yes... it's just a way to be nice to others you love (friends, parents, familiars... ) grandmas and grandpas usually say that... tesoro mio... my love, darling, honey.... sweety... etc... not necessary between lovers... just friends... it depends on the context, on how you say it. 'Cara' is not very common: lovers prefer to call each other 'amore (mio)', 'tesoro (mio)' and so on. Note that both could sound a bit ironic in spoken language, especially 'cara mia'. 'Eh, cara mia, sapessi quanto lavoro! (= tu invece non fai niente)'... It depends on the voice pitch, anyway. Also note that men generally don't tell 'caro' (and of course not 'tesoro'!) to same-sex friends, while women may do. 'Amore', instead, is only used by lovers or from parent to child (but rarely from father to son).

Romagna, Italy AmE - hillbilly ;) Ciao Lorellapo, and welcome to the Forum! I'm not a native Italian speaker, but I've lived in Italy long enough to hear "Tesoro mio" used frequently, and I'd say it's perfectly okay for a woman or a man to use, with a lover or husband, or child (in fact, it's frequently used with adorable children - even when not related). I'm surprised this entire discussion doesn't discuss the possible translations into English (since this is a translation forum - not the "Italian Only" forum). The only mention of a translation I have seen is "My darling" which is okay (the important thing is to avoid any Italian attempt to translate it literally to "My treasure" - which really sounds contrived). But I'd more likely translate it to "Sweetheart" or "Darling" (without the possessive form) - which (in English) can be used both for lover/spouses and children (and in the same way as I've heard the Italian "Tesoro" or "Tesoro mio" used. Personally I think the possessive form of "My Darling!" sounds contrived - or something I might expect to find in a melodramma or in a romantic novel (and not used as frequently as "Darling" or "Sweetheart" or "Tesoro"/"Tesoro mio" might be).
