Texas Rangers Vs. Toronto Blue Jays: When Is Opening Day 2022?

At long last, the dreaded MLB lockout is over and the Texas Rangers will play baseball in 2022! But even though our beloved sport has returned to us, it won’t in the same form as anticipated. Opening Day is one of those events that was affected by the cancellation of games as part of the negotiation process.

The result? The Texas Rangers won’t play the New York Yankees at Globe Life Field to begin the 2022 season. Instead, they’ll wait until the first week in April to begin the year.

When is Texas Rangers Opening Day 2022?

The Texas Rangers will open the season on April 8 against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada. Some teams will open the season April 7, but that day had been a scheduled off-day for the Rangers even on the regular schedule.

Former Blue Jay (and current Ranger) Marcus Semien will get a chance to have a revenge game right away as he faces off against his former teammates. Texas also has some history against the Blue Jays, especially in playoff matchups dating back to 2015 and 2016, when the two sides faced off in epic series.

Against Toronto in 2021, the Rangers had a 2-4 record, losing both of their series to the Jays. Neither team made the playoffs last season, though the Blue Jays came much closer than Texas did.

Originally scheduled to play the Yankees at Globe Life Field on Opening Day, those games will now be played as doubleheaders later in the season, so Texas will still reap the benefits of one of the largest attendance draws in baseball.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting season after a lockout that looked to have no end in sight for a while. We’re glad to have the Texas Rangers back, though, and April 8 simply can’t come fast enough!
