Season six of The 100 was a turning point for the show in a number of ways. Not only was there a major time jump thanks to cryosleep, allowing the residents of Eligius IV to wake up orbiting a brand new Earth-like planet called Sanctum. However, after landing on the new world, things quickly went awry and the supposed paradise turned out to be anything but a utopia.

Sanctum was led by a group known as the Primes, who were the original four families who colonised the planet.

However, they continued to survive for generations after transferring their minds into a new host body.

Marcus Kane (played by Henry Ian Cusick) sadly died in season six after sustaining fatal injuries.

Despite living on, Marcus couldn’t exist in this way and chose to die instead.

He bid farewell to Abby and the others before he was floated out into space.

Abby soon followed him after Russell Lightbourne (J.R. Bourne) wiped her mind and used her body as a host for his wife.

Her daughter Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor) was left heartbroken and floated Abby out into space later on, so her mother’s body couldn’t be desecrated in such a manner by the Primes.

Speaking about why the two characters met such a sad demise rather than just leaving the series, showrunner Jason Rothenberg explained the creative decision.

He told TV Line: “On this show, we try to make the character deaths hurt. It’s a tragedy.

“And we do things to increase the emotional devastation of the audience—I’m not being cavalier about it, but we do things within the context of an episode to make the audience see the character differently or come to love the character before we kill them, because we’re trying to maximize the impact of that death.

“Sometimes it’s a heroic death, but sometimes it’s just tragic and senseless and sudden, the way that we experience death in life.

“So with Abby, I think it was all of those things. With Kane, I think it was all of those things.

“It’s never going to be wrapped up in a bow, it’s never going to be pretty. It’s always going to be painful.”

He went on to say that Clarke would be “working through it” in season seven and the loss would “affect her in a big way”.

The television executive said: “We eventually lose our parents, god forbid. That is a natural passage, and she’s now going through that.

“She’s going to have a lot of responsibilities as always and she’ll need to compartmentalize [sic] her emotions, too, but I think you’ll see in season seven that she has time to grieve and work it out thoroughly and often.”
