Good thing cats have nine lives because Milo lost eight of them on set

The Adventures of Milo and Otis (1986) KILL COUNT

Translate Translated from by SilentDawn Review by SilentDawn ★★ 15

Terrifying, deranged, horrific, sickening, evil and tortuous; The Adventures of Milo and Otis is one of the most unnecessary combinations of imagery and sound in the cinematic medium. Throughout its unbearable 76 minute runtime, a piercing and devastating battle was waging inside me, deep down in a place where my love for Katy Perry is uncontrollable and my hatred for Nathan Kress is inconceivable. That battle, though tragic and frightful, was essential to discovering my true opinion on this matter.

My opinion is this; Milo and Otis are self-righteous pricks.

But God bless their little souls....

My brother and I used to watch this when we were little, and I liked it because the cute dog and cat go on a silly adventure.

Fast forward to the present day and he had it on for a nostalgia watch. I made it 10 minutes in and was like:

Wow they actually had that bear interacting with that cat.Wow it looks like those seagulls are really attacking that cat.Wow it looks like they really threw a cat off of a cliff. Finally, I put everything together and decided to google this sweet little kids movie. Turns out, it’s infamous for all of the mass animal murder that happened on set. Everything you’re seeing actually happened, and so much more that didn’t make it into this hellish abomination.

Fuck this movie, fuck everyone involved in making it, and fuck everyone who saw it in 1986 and thought it could be released.

Good thing they introduced Joyce and Sandra in the eleventh hour to make it clear that Milo and Otis were NOT in love and that they love their WIVES and CHILDREN and that they were NOT gay

It's cool how there were allegations that 20 animals died during production and the filmmakers denied the claims and then theres a scene where they threw a cat off a 40 foot tall cliff and after that scene the pattern of the cat's fur was different

I can't stop thinking about that episode of hannah montana where miley and lily are spying on the jonas brothers so they dress up as dudes and name themselves milo and otis... like what an obscure reference

Rest in peace, 20 kittens.

I'm giving this film three stars purely for the gorgeous, vibrant color grading (seriously, we need more films that look like this!). It just radiates that warm, nostalgic summer vibe — like childhood in the best way. I swear, if a movie could have a scent, this one would smell amazing.

But as I watched, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the animals looked really uncomfortable. It blows my mind that people didn’t pick up on this in the first few years after its release — there’s no CGI here, which means those animals were clearly forced into dangerous and cruel situations just to get the shots the director wanted. It’s honestly disturbing, and even if I knew nothing about what happened behind the scenes, I’d still feel uneasy watching it.

Very cute, but

Cat vs. river vs. cliff vs. waterfall vs. hedgehog vs. bear vs. raccoon?

Safe to say some animals were harmed during the making of this film

There are a handful of movies that feel like they’ve “always existed,” copies easily found at my parents’ or my relatives’ as far back as I can remember being conscious. The Adventures of Milo and Otis is perhaps the strangest of that lot, cobbled together for American audiences from a longer [and far less readily available] Japanese cut, simultaneously blessed and cursed by the addition of Dudley Moore’s narration. His work lives and dies by the material: whenever the voiceover veers into the poetic or the foreboding, it’s gripping, and whenever it descends into lame jokes or annoying voices, it’s maddening. Unethical production aside, the nature footage captured by the original filmmakers is frequently amazing, and the movie shines brightest…

I feel I need to start off by acknowledging the animal cruelty charges that lace through most of the reviews of Milo and Otis. I don't even disagree with them but, as with many bad things, I have trouble judging a 30-year-old film by modern US morals, especially when that film was made in a non-US country. As far as I'm concerned, the statute of limitations has passed. The film exists--no changing that--and I don't anticipate enjoying the film now would make future filmmakers think that repeating the less savory filmmaking techniques in Milo and Otis a good idea.

I say that not to convince other people that they shouldn't worry about the animals on screen, but to explain why…
