Set in the second year of the Dark Knight's crimefighting career, The Batman sees the titular hero investigating the Edward Nashton/Riddler (Paul Dano), a murderer targeting Gotham's elite, including Bruce Wayne. This then leads to a larger investigation in which Batman will find himself interacting with such classic villains as Catwoman, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) and Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin (Colin Farrell). There are also rumors Eternals star Barry Keoghan will play a version of the Joker, though he's currently listed as Gotham City Police Department officer Stanley Merkel.

The Batman was originally slated to be directed, produced, co-written and starring Ben Affleck, who played the Dark Knight in the DC Extended Universe starting with 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, Affleck eventually departed the project entirely, resulting in Matt Reeves boarding as director and Robert Pattinson taking over as Batman. Affleck is currently slated to play Batman on the upcoming The Flash film, and there's no indication he'll play the role again after that title.

Just how The Batman will perform at the box office remains to be seen. The budget for the film is estimated to be $100 million, and movies centered on the Dark Knight have tended to perform quite well. 2008's The Dark Knight, for example, made more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office and is one of the highest-grossing films ever. That success also came despite having not been released in China, one of the biggest markets for movies. The Batman, though, has been delayed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had many reticent to return to theaters. Still, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which released in December, has proven a massive success despite a similar climate, earning more than $1.6 billion worldwide.

The Batman releases on March 4. At this time, The Batman is expected to have a runtime of two hours and 55 minutes, making it the longest feature film centered on the Dark Knight.
