TL;DR
With three interchangeable bowl designs, each with varying depths for different hair lengths and thicknesses, Ouidad’s Made for Curls 3-in-1 Universal Diffuser took the top spot as our favorite. In second place is the Curlsmith Difrizzion Diffuser/Hair Dryer, which, even on a low speed and medium heat setting, cuts drying time and frizz in half.
For curly hair, there's often a love/hate relationship with hair dryers, but according to Aeleise Ollarvia, hairstylist and co-founder of Cut It Kinky, a diffuser makes all the difference. "A diffuser is a great, portable way to take curls from wet to dry with minimal flyaways," she explains. “It can also enhance volume during the drying process if desired.”
The concept of a diffuser is similar to that of a hooded dryer, but without the need to sit for an extended period. “Diffusers are attachments that you put on the end of the nozzle of your hair dryer that will disperse the airflow,” says Ouidad stylist and educator, Andrea Malczewski. “Imagine going outside on a warm summer day, and there’s a light breeze. Similarly, this is somewhat close to what a diffuser does to your hair,” explains Malczewski.
So, if you’ve been searching for a way to achieve defined, frizz-free curls, we suggest reaching for one of our favorite diffusers from the list below. We spent hours testing on various curl types and textures, researching and evaluating top-rated dryers, and consulting with hair care experts to determine the best options.

Ouidad Made for Curls 3-in-1 Universal Diffuser
Comes with two attachments
The deep bowl is ideal for long and thick hair
Lightweight
Attachments can be difficult to swap in and out
Some customers experience snagging
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 1 | Attachments: 3 | Warranty: None
The overall quality and durability of this diffuser is a 10/10. It's crafted from a high-temperature-resistant silicone and nylon material. The deep bowl design and large prongs work well on thick, long hair, and while it’s meant to be attached to your existing blow-dryer, it comes with two other attachments that can be swapped in based on your hair length and hair type.
Our tester noted that the diffuser helped dry her hair evenly from roots to ends, taking about an hour to completely dry her hair, which she points out as typical for a diffuser dry. ”This compared pretty much the same to my usual method, except I noticed more definition after using this diffuser,” says Shauna Beni-Haynes, senior editor.

Shauna Beni-Haynes, former senior editor with 3C/4A hair: “I love how easy this diffuser was to use. It's easy to attach and remove from various hair dryers. I was able to attach it to my Deva Curl dryer and Dyson dryer. It feels secure on both dryers and doesn't feel loose during the process. The size and shape were perfect for my hair type and length. I like how wide the diffuser is.”
Best Budget
BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Universal Finger Diffuser
Affordable price
Doesn’t snag
Works well on short hair
Not compatible with all hair dryers
Frizz reduction is minimal
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 1 | Attachments: 1 | Warranty: None
You’ll need a slim barrel hair dryer for this one to work, but once you get it on, it stays put. The deep bowl and multi-length prongs are ideal for drying the roots of hair and, overall, getting in between the strands for a thorough dry. With the right dryer, it’s a straightforward, affordable diffuser that’s ideal for targeting heat and hot air towards the roots.

Tameka, tester with 4B/C hair (not pictured): “My hair shrinks when wet, so there's not much length to see. But the dryer was able to get in between my curls and dry them. The diffuser is durable and has a deep bowl with multiple prongs that can easily reach between your curls. It was super helpful when drying, and also I felt my curls being held by the diffuser without being snagged or brushed out.”
Best for Volume
Bellissima Italia Diffon Supreme
Adds volume
Deep bowl for long and thick hair
Built-in blow-dryer capabilities
Cool function is still somewhat warm air
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 3 heat/2 speeds/cool shot | Attachments: 1 | Warranty: 2 years
The unique design of this hybrid diffuser and blow-dryer serves the sole purpose of drying and defining curly and coily hair. While most diffusers attach to a standard blow-dryer, this one has a diffuser head with a built-in blow-dryer body. Our tester noted that the diffuser is easier to grip and maneuver around the head than some traditional dryers with diffuser attachments. The large bowl is also amply sized to hold long, thick curls.

Karla, tester with thick, wavy, color-treated hair (not pictured): “I noticed more volume after using the diffuser, with only a slight difference in bounce. My hair is wavy, but this diffuser did help enhance and define my natural curl pattern. Usually, my waves look messy, but they looked more put-together after using the diffuser. I did have to use a spray oil to help with frizz, though. With this diffuser, my waves felt soft and more full of life even the next day.”
Best for Curly/Coily Hair
Curlsmith De-Frizzion Dryer
Extra-large 8-inch bowl for thick hair types
Doesn’t snag
Tester notes that it cut drying time in half
Not compatible with all blow-dryers
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 3 heat/2 speeds | Attachments: 3 | Warranty: None
With intuitive heat settings and air speeds, and a large and lightweight diffuser head, this dryer and diffuser combo is ideal for a range of curl types—especially thicker and long textured hair. Even with finer, less dense hair, it helped cut drying time in half for our tester and significantly reduced frizz.

Ashley, tester with 2C curly, thin, and dry hair (not pictured): “The large diffuser head has been a game-changer for my curls. I get less frizz, and it dries in half the time. I love the way this diffuser leaves my curls—bold, defined, bouncy, and very voluminous. These full-bodied curls had me coming back to the Curlsmith most mornings. I tested and used all the heat and speed settings and found that the low speed with medium heat gave me the best results.”
Best for Definition
Drybar The Bouncer Diffuser
Adds definition
Fully dried 4C hair in 10 minutes
Large surface area easily holds thicker curls
The bowl is not as deep as other diffusers
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 1 | Attachments: 1 | Warranty: None
Our tester was able to coax some definition back into heat-damaged sections of hair and fully dry thicker, 4C hair from roots to ends in 10 minutes. The diffuser is designed for the Drybar blow-dryers, but will fit most other tools, too. The bowl depth and diffuser fingers are on the shallow and short side, but overall, the diffuser is wide, covering a large section of curls at once.

Tameka, tester with 4B/C hair (not pictured): “This diffuser actually dried my roots and my ends. I usually don't like to dry my ends because I like to style them with product and keep my roots dry. If air-dried, my roots will stay wet, and I'm not a fan of that. Because of the airflow, I decided to just try drying my ends to see what it would look like. It came out really fluffy, and my curls held up. It took about 10 minutes to master my desired style.”
Best Lightweight
Bio Ionic Universal Diffuser
Feels comfortable and light to hold
Stays cool to the touch
Multi-sized prongs for easier root drying
Not compatible with all blow-dryers
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 1 | Attachments: 1 | Warranty: None
Not only did this diffuser win over our tester, it’s one of Malczewski’s favorites, too. “The Bio Ionic universal diffuser fits perfectly with the dryer and has a nice, big bowl, so it covers a lot of surface area on your head. It’s my go-to dryer/diffuser combo I use on all my clients,” she says. It features 12 air pockets to dry hair faster and is crafted with natural volcanic mineral, which helps infuse moisture into hair while it dries.

Cortney tester with 3C/4A hair (not pictured): “My curly hair naturally shrinks up when dry, but with this diffuser, it seemed like my strands were voluminous and bouncy while also being a little elongated. Coupled with my styling products, the diffuser offered definition and shine to my frizz-prone curls. My hair looked and felt healthy after diffusing, which hasn't normally been the result I've gotten from other diffuser attachments.”
Best Angeled
Dyson Airwrap Wave+Curl Diffuser
Angled head makes for easy maneuvering curls and waves
Vented sides keep it from getting too hot
Stays put while drying
Only works with the Dyson Airwrap and Airwrap i.d. dryers
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 2 | Attachments: 1 | Warranty: 1 year
If you’re already a Dyson Airwrap convert, this diffuser will add even more options to your style rotation. What sets it apart is the tilted base that allows for less awkward maneuvering, particularly in the back and crown of the head. The diffuser also features vents on the sides, designed to disperse the air more evenly around curls, resulting in faster drying with less damage. There are also two modes in which the diffuser can be used. Use the traditional pronged head to get to the roots of damp hair, or pop off the top and cup curls in a dome for more definition.

Nykia, tester with dense, fine, 4A/B hair (not pictured): “After using this, my curls felt soft, not crunchy, and bouncier than with other diffusers. I had to concentrate a bit longer on areas generally more prone to frizz, and it took a little longer to smooth out those parts. Overall, this diffuser left my curls more defined compared to air-drying.”
Best for Body
Shark FlexStyle Diffuser
Retractable and extendable prongs reach long to lift at the root, adding volume
Quick and secure attaching
Stays cool to the touch
Only compatible with the Shark FlexStyle Series
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 2 | Attachments: 1 | Warranty: 2 years
Shark’s diffuser is as versatile as the multistyler itself. Retractable and expandable prongs make it easy to style both long and short curls and get close to the roots for faster drying. If it’s volume you’re after, extend the prongs for more lift at the roots. The airflow and heat settings also make for speedy drying. However, note that it's only compatible with the corresponding Shark FlexStyle series.

Ashley, tester with 2C curly, thin, and dry hair: “Within minutes, my hair was completely dried, styled, and ready to go. It gave me an even dry which I struggle to find in other diffusers. Most other diffusers dry the ends of my hair faster than my roots. This gives me a fast, even dry from root to tip. It took me 10 minutes to dry and style my hair completely, which is the fastest I’ve experienced compared to other diffusers, hair dryers, and an air-dry.”
Best for Frizz
Wavytalk Turblow Pro Blow Dryer
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 3 heat/3 speeds | Attachments: 2 | Warranty: 1 year
This compact dryer has a higher quality feel and functionality than you’d expect from a hot tool that’s priced under $100. The diffuser attaches very easily with a strong magnet and stays secure while blow-drying. Overall, the tool is a lot smaller than other diffuser/dryer combos, and the diffuser bowl isn’t very deep, but still large enough to hold longer curls, and the vents at the base help the air flow through powerfully for a quick dry. The dryer also uses negative ion tech that significantly cuts down on frizz for our tester and the auto-cycling heat setting was a bonus for heat-damaged sections of hair.

Nykia, tester with dense, fine, 4A/4B hair (not pictured): “The diffuser made my hair a lot more voluminous, and it defined my curls more than air-drying. It also helped my curls hold better on days two and three, and looked a lot less frizzy the next day after drying, compared to when I air-dry. What I love most is how well it defines my curls and how quickly the tool dries my hair. I also love the range of heat settings and the ability to go up on the more porous areas that usually take longer to dry and then dial it down on the quick-drying areas."
Best Multistyler
Shark SpeedStyle RapidGloss Hair Dryer
All-in-one tool that’s great for creating a variety of styles
Minimizes heat damage to hair
Delivers a silky, naturally shiny finish
It's an investment
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 2 streams of high-speed airflow | Attachments: 3 | Warranty: 2-year limited
This isn’t a diffuser, a dryer, and it’s certainly not your run-of-the-mill hot tool—it's a multistyler. There are not one, not two, but three different attachments included: a RapidGloss Finisher, a QuickSmooth round brush, and a DefrizzFast diffuser. The multi-styling diffuser is noteworthy in and of itself, with retractable and extendable prongs that help shape your curls to perfection. Plus, this also allows you to wear your hair smooth if you want to blow-dry it straight or add back waves with the curl wraps. Not to mention that it measures and regulates the air temperature a whopping 1,000 times per second, helping to drastically cut down on the likelihood of heat damage.
Ally Hirschlag, former associate editorial director with type 2B/3A curly hair: “I love how lightweight the Shark is, and the attachments that come with it are surprisingly useful. But the diffuser was on another level. It has these spokes that you can adjust up and down to boost volume at the roots." (If you already have the SpeedStyle, you can purchase the diffuser separately.)
Best Splurge
Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer
Unmatched styling capabilities
Reduces damage
Includes diffuser
Pricier than other options
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 4 heat/3 speeds | Attachments: 5 | Warranty: 2 years
This Supersonic hair dryer is quite the splurge, but users who love it say it’s worth every penny. Ollarvia says this dryer “has power and heat but doesn't displace the hair even on the highest air setting. It's game-changing because the hair can dry in half the time.” Its technology takes blow-drying one step further by doing the work of your favorite heat protectant and guarding your hair against damage for 75% increased smoothness and 132% decreased flyaways—no matter the humidity. Yes, it's expensive, but it's also won over fans who swear by its results, so we think it's worth the spend.
Ally Hirschlag, former associate editorial director with type 2B/3A curly hair: “I could not get over how quickly this dried my hair (10 minutes, no joke), all without heat. That was a major plus, considering my hair is color-treated. I can definitely tell the difference in the texture when I heat style, but my hair felt so healthy and smooth after using this one. I know the price is a lot to stomach, but the technology, coupled with the amazing extras, is simply unmatched.”
Best Compact
T3 T3 Soft Touch Compact Diffuser
Ideal for travel
Very lightweight
Smaller size works well on short hair
Only compatible with the T3 Featherweight Compact dryer
Gets hot to the touch when dryer is at its highest heat level
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 1 | Attachments: 1 | Warranty: None
For its size, T3’s tiny dryer allows for powerful airflow that defines and dries hair fast. It’s ideal for travel and shorter hair, and despite its tiny size, it efficiently adds volume and curl definition. Our tester noted that it didn’t take much longer to dry hair than a larger-sized diffuser.
Ashley, tester with type 2, fine and wavy hair: “I felt that my hair looked voluminous after using this diffuser, and it enhanced my natural curl and wave pattern; there was minimal frizz, mostly at the top. I'm able to style my hair many different ways, and I liked the way my waves and curls looked after using this specific diffuser. My waves looked voluminous, and you can see my natural curl pattern.”
Best With Blow-Dryer
Conair INFINITI PRO by CONAIR Hair Dryer
Features a blow-dryer
The rubberized handle doesn’t slip while using
True cold shot to lock in style
The diffuser head is on the smaller side
Type: Diffuser | Settings: 3 heat/ 2 speeds | Attachments: 2 | Warranty: 3-year limited
This hot tool helps shape curls and then locks them in with its true cool shot setting. The diffuser head isn’t as wide as some others on this list, but the airflow is powerful, so it’s able to get hair fully dry in a reasonable timeframe (25 minutes for our tester). If you’re looking for a baseline all-in-one- dryer and diffuser combo that won’t cost too much, but helps with definition, start here.
Ashley, tester with 2C curly, thin, and dry hair: “With its powerful airflow, the hair dryer and diffuser helped gorgeously shape my curls. The diffuser attachment is not as big as other attachments I’ve tested, taking a little more time and effort to style my curls. The attachment features two levels of prongs—7 in the outer ring and 7 in the inner ring, all of the same size. The diffuser is average in weight, heat, and noise, making it easy to handle and use. The quality and durability are there, but not top-tier. It’s a good investment for the cost.”
What to Look for When Shopping for Diffusers for Curly Hair
- Size and Shape: When you’re buying a blow-dryer that already comes with a diffuser attachment, you’re in the clear. But if you are searching for an attachment, Ollarvia says, “Make sure the one you purchase fits securely on your preferred handled dryer. This will reduce fumbling and possible frizzing of the hair.”
- Your Hair's Thickness: Thick hair obviously needs a bit of assistance to dry quickly, so those with thick hair should choose a diffuser with longer prongs that can penetrate your curls and coils to dry your hair at the root.
- Prong Length: Diffusers come with various prong sizes, ranging from short to long. If you've got long hair, it's best to go with long prongs, allowing for better air circulation at the roots. Shorter hair types can go with shorter prongs since getting to the roots will be easier.
How We Tested Diffusers for Curly Hair
Byrdie
To create this definitive list of the best diffusers for curly hair, we asked our team of editors and testers for their favorite picks. By combining their recommendations and insights with guidance from a professional hairstylist, we landed on these diffusers as the most effective options out there.
- Diffusers for Curly Hair Tested: 13
- Testing Period: 1+ year
- Methodology: Our editors and testers used several hair diffusers in the office and at home, incorporating them into regular use.
- Factors Considered: Ease of use, design, drying ability, performance, resulting look.
- What are the benefits of using a diffuser for curly hair?
A diffuser helps control the air coming out of your hair dryer, allowing your curls to remain more intact and defined. Overall, these versatile attachments will help set your curls faster to prevent frizz and add definition and volume. “The longer your hair is in a wet state, the more at risk you are for your curls to rub against your clothing, anything you sit against, or the temptation to touch it, resulting in the cuticle of your hair being roughened and thus frizzy,” says Malczewski.
- How do you use a diffuser for curly hair?
Gently comb through your hair with a brush and dry it softly with a towel after showering. Apply your styling products and a heat protectant. Then, divide your hair into sections. Put individual sections of your hair into the bowl-like part of the diffuser, pushing up from tip to root so that the prongs touch your scalp. From there, massage the diffuser into your hair by moving your dryer upward in a slow, circular motion. Set the dryer to low heat and speed settings to prevent your hair from becoming tangled and difficult to handle.
Malczewski advises considering your desired end result before you start diffusing. “If your goal when you are styling your curls is maximum definition/elongation to your curl pattern, you want to make sure that you hover the diffuser the entire time you are waiting for your hair to dry,” she notes. You want to make sure you are not touching the diffuser to your curls at all.
To create more volume, she advises hovering the diffuser around your hair until it’s about 85% dry, then scooping your curls up into the diffuser bowl and letting them sit inside the diffuser to help encourage the curls to bounce up. “Flipping your head around from side to side and upside down helps the process of creating more volume in the root area while you scoop up your hair in the bowl of the diffuser.” With either method, both Malczewski and Ollarvia point out that you should never touch your hair while it’s drying. “Too much touching and handling of your hair while it’s drying will cause frizz,” Malczewski adds.
- Does a diffuser curl your hair?
While diffusers help achieve a sleeker, more controlled dry process, Malczewski notes that if you don’t have curly hair, a diffuser won’t add curl to your hair. “If you have natural curl, a diffuser is going to enhance or control the curl pattern. If you don’t have natural curl, a diffuser will give a more effortless air-dry look.”
