The Big Bang Theory Star Defends Raj's Divisive Ending

Raj may not have found his life partner before The Big Bang Theory wrapped up, but Kunal Nayyar has no issues with it. Last year, CBS' popular sitcom finally wrapped up after 12 seasons with a special one-hour finale. Overall, it was well-received as it left every single one of the Pasadena gang at a good place — except for Raj who continues to be loveless at the end of the show.

Over the years, the characters have grown professionally and personally. Six out of the seven main cast members are happily married when The Big Bang Theory ended. Howard and Bernie are happy with their two kids; Leonard and Penny are expecting their first child, while Sheldon and Amy wins the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work in Super Asymmetry. That left Raj with barely having anything going in his life and some fans didn't appreciate that.

More than a year since The Big Bang Theory wrapped up, Nayyar is speaking up about his character's divisive ending in the series, saying he doesn't have any issues with it. Defending the creative decision in a new interview with Metro UK in light of his new project, Netflix's Criminal, the actor says that he finds Raj's ending somewhat poignant, adding that just because it wasn't shown in the show, doesn't mean that he won't find his life partner in the future.

"I find it quite poignant that the one character that believed in true love so much was the one who didn't, in the end, find it. It's beautiful! It doesn't have to be so formulaic, that's what I loved about the show – it doesn't have to be a certain way, you know?

"In the world of these characters, they wake up the next morning, and their life continues. So somewhere, these guys are living and having a great life and their adventures are continuing.

"That’s why it was not some big bang ending you know? Like someone moves, and someone dies, or something like that. It was because we're saying goodbye to the show, but in their lives, they're continuing on.

"I don't know what Raj is doing. But we have this Hindi word called masti. He's up to some mischief. So wherever he is, he's doing some masti!"

The Big Bang Theory's final season did try giving the character a love life; for the most part of season 12, Raj was engaged to Anu whom his father set-up for him. For a while, the pair worked well; Anu didn't mind that Raj has feminine tendencies. For some reason, however, that plotline fell through the cracks and wasn't developed further with the focus shifting on the Coopers' bid for the Nobel and the Hofstadters' baby dilemma. In the end, the couple decided to call it quits, although quite frankly, it wasn't clear why they just decided to give up.

In hindsight, the issue wasn't really about Raj not having a girlfriend or a wife at the end of The Big Bang Theory. Instead, it's the lack of focus in moving his arc forward. He'd been mostly relegated as a side character when he's supposed to be a main player in the show. While there were episodes and even arcs dedicated to him, it didn't feel like it fully progressed him as a person. Most of the time, Raj's storylines are B-plots or worse, done just for humor. Given this, the fans have a justified reason for how Raj's arc was handled in the sitcom.
