She didn't survive the book but does heroine Tris make it to the end of The Divergent Series: Allegiant? The resounding success of The Hunger Games in 2012 led to a surge in dystopian young adult movies, each hoping to launch a franchise. The Maze Runner was successful enough to complete a trilogy, while The Giver or The 5th Wave failed to make it past one installment. One franchise that started strong was The Divergent Series which was based on the novel series by Veronica Roth.

Divergent is set in a futuristic world where people are divided into different classes based on their values. Lead character Tris (Shailene Woodley) learns she's a "divergent" and doesn't fit into any one category, which is something that could get her killed if she's discovered. The first installment was a solid hit back in 2014 and featured a great cast of up and coming actors, including Miles Teller, Bill Skarsgard, and Zoe Kravitz. The second entry The Divergent Series: Insurgent was also a hit, but its box-office haul notably did little to improve on the results of the first movie.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant made the decision to split Veronica Roth's final book in two, which is a tactic the Harry Potter and Hunger Games movie franchises also employed. Unfortunately, by the time the third entry arrived in 2016, there was already clear signs that interest in dystopian YA blockbusters was waning, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant grossed around a $100 million less than the previous movie. This put the planned final chapter The Divergent Series: Ascendant in doubt, and while the studio tried to make the final chapter as a TV movie instead, vocal disinterest from cast members like Woodley, Teller, and Theo James ruled out that option.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant thus proved to be an abrupt end to the series. One controversial element of Veronica Roth's Allegiant novel was its ending, where Tris sacrifices herself and is shot dead. Many fans hated this outcome, with Roth even responding to the outcry on her blog following the book's publication to address the reasons she killed the character. If there was one positive to The Divergent Series: Allegiant's ending, where Tris exposes the existence of the Bureau and how they were using the people of Chicago for a genetic experiment, is that she at least survives.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant ending was a cliffhanger teasing the final movie, though it's unknown if Tris would have survived to the end of Ascendant. Given the backlash the book received its possible she would have been granted a happier ending, but sadly, fans who wanted to see the end of the movie saga will never know the answer.
