After the premiere of “WandaVision,” the Disney+ debut of the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is inching closer. As revealed in a Super Bowl ad in early February, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” will usher in the next era of Marvel television when the series hits Disney+ on March 19, 2021.

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been a long road to the debut of the show. Disney halted production on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on March 10 due to concerns about the coronavirus. The show began brief shoots in Prague in early March, but the studio decided to shut down production and recall staff to Atlanta.

Disney first teased the show — along with “WandaVision” and the upcoming “Loki,” in a 2020 Super Bowl commercial that offered a few glimpses of super-powered action. The two-minute 2021 Super Bowl trailer below went into a little more detail — is that buddy cop banter we hear?! — and indicated the show would be a contrast to the intentionally weird esoteric sitcom-as-a-strategy-to-del-with-grief undercurrent of “WandaVision.”

Only time will tell how the aftereffects of “Avengers: Endgame” impacted Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, and the other Avengers, but it’s clear that the duo will have to confront enemies both old and new. Here’s everything you need to know about the series’ leading cast and crew:

  • The Final Trailer Boasts Plenty of Action

The final trailer for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” which was released on March 15, teases that the series will be significantly more action-oriented than “WandaVision,” the first Marvel Cinematic Universe show to premiere on Disney+. The titular protagonists appeared in a variety of action scenes throughout the trailer, including a high-speed brawl on top of cars and a fight that appeared to take place inside of a bank.

  • A Second Season Isn’t Confirmed — but Is Definitely Possible

Though Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that its Marvel Cinematic Universe shows on Disney+ will be getting second seasons, Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently stated that “there’s certainly ideas” for a sophomore season of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The Disney+ Marvel shows are expected to closely tie into the franchise’s films and Feige promised that Marvel’s shows and films would go “back and forth” between each other.

  • Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie)

Sam Wilson, AKA the Falcon, took on the Captain America mantle — and the character’s iconic shield — at the end of “Avengers: Endgame.” He’ll team up with Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier for a globetrotting adventure, but specific details about the series’ plot are still under wraps. The two heroes were occasionally enemies in older Marvel comic books but have been on good terms in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan)

Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier survived a world war, spent decades as an unwilling HYDRA assassin, and was killed and subsequently resurrected in the last two “Avengers” films. Now, the hero is finally entering the spotlight as the Falcon’s partner in the upcoming Disney+ series. It seems that Bucky will be confronting adversaries both old and new, as a scene in the series’ Super Bowl spot shows the Winter Soldier pointing a gun at Helmut Zemo, the villain who manipulated Bucky in “Captain America: Civil War.”

  • Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl)

The antagonistic Helmut Zemo, who lost his family in the the climatic finale of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” orchestrated the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” but was imprisoned at the end of that film. Daniel Brühl will reprise his role in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and though it is unclear how he’ll factor into the plot, it’s safe to bet that he’s broken out of captivity and will be eager to exact his revenge on the series’ titular protagonists.

  • John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell)

It’s not guaranteed that John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) is going to be the show’s primary antagonist — the character has been an Avenger in some comic book arcs but is mostly known as a villian — but it’s a safe bet, given that his whole shtick is being the darker successor to the original Captain America. In the comics, U.S. Agent was a brutal reactionary who the U.S. government tapped to replace the first Cap, which should put him at odds with the Falcon in the Disney+ series.

  • Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp)

Sharon Carter supported the original Captain America as a S.H.I.E.L.D-turned-CIA insider, and Emily VanCamp will reprise the character in her first Marvel television appearance. The character was the daughter of Peggy Carter, Captain America’s love interest and the focus of the since-cancelled “Agent Carter” TV series.

  • Kari Skogland (series director)

Kari Skogland had a hand in popular series ranging from “The Handmaid’s Tale” to “The Walking Dead” and is bringing her talents to Disney+. Skogland is directing the entire “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” series and previously directed one episode of Netflix’s “The Punisher.”
