About knee pain: Have you ever dreamed of hiking the Appalachian Trail? Or strolling the beach at Hilton Head? Or maybe you’ve reached the point where simply climbing a set of stairs is a dream. If these goals seem to be further away than ever, you may be one of the millions of people with pain in the knees. Pain in these joints can impede the simplest act such as walking, bending, or just rising from a chair. Golfing, hiking, or even gardening may be out of the question.
Your knees rank among your largest joints. They support your body’s weight and they must work in close coordination with the hips to provide the mobility most people take for granted until injury, arthritis, or other problems interfere. One in 5 Americans age 60 and older has experienced significant knee pain on most days over the last six weeks. Each year, Americans make about 15 million visits to doctors for knee pain..
Physically, your knees and hips are closely interdependent, located as they are at either end of the thighbone. This proximity means the angle of your hip affects the pressure on your knee and vice versa. A hip disorder may cause knee pain, and knee disorders can aggravate hip problems.
People live longer than they used to, so joints need to stay strong and healthy through those additional years. Knees are subject to repetitive trauma — wear and tear — as you age, and you can traumatize them further if you increase your physical activity suddenly. Depending on the cause of your pain, the solution can be a set of exercises designed to strengthen and stretch the muscles that support the joint, taking some of the stress off the joint itself. Call and schedule an evaluation with one of our therapists to learn what we can do to help.

About hip pain: Hip pain can stop you from doing the activities that you enjoy; walking, running, golf, tennis or simply sitting or climbing stairs. Hip pain is a common problem, and it can be confusing because there are many causes. One in seven Americans reports significant hip pain in any six week period. Hip pain accounts for 6 million doctor visits a year. The hip joint works functionally with the knee joint. They are among the largest joints in your body and are subjected to tremendous forces (strain) during daily activities.
Hip pain refers to pain that occurs in and around your hip. Hip pain can be caused by problems with your hip joint. This type of hip pain tends to be felt on the inside of your hip or in your groin. Hip pain can also be caused by problems with the muscle, ligaments, tendons and other structures that support your hip joint. Hip pain associated with these problems tends to occur on the outside of the hip or the upper thigh. Hip pain can sometimes be caused by diseases and conditions in other areas of your body. This type of pain is called referred pain. Most hip pain can be treated successfully with Physical Therapy.
Hip program: It is important to do a detailed examination to assess the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the underlying problem. We look at strength, range of motion, and alignment with the knee and lower limb to decide on the best course of treatment. Our rehab program will be tailored to your specific problem and will include the following:
- Rapid pain relief program
- Restoration of proper alignment to normalize weight bearing through the joints
- Patient education with proactive patient involvement

About elbow, wrist and hand pain: The elbow, wrist and arm, along with the hand and fingers, allow the body to perform a vast range of activities. It is important to ensure their health by taking care of these extremities and being aware whenever pain is present.
Pain in these areas can be caused by various injuries or health conditions and may be accompanied by bruising and swelling. These may include:
- Acute injuries or trauma (e.g., sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations)
- Arthritis (e.g., osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis)
- Repetitive motion disorders (e.g., bursitis, tendinitis, tennis elbow)
- A nerve problem (e.g., pinched nerve, carpel tunnel syndrome, and complex regional pain syndrome)
- Infection of a joint, bone or bursa (e.g., osteomyelitis)
- Referred pain from the neck, shoulder, chest or another part of the body
- Post surgical pain and restricted mobility
If you have pain in the elbow, wrist or hand or limitation of strength or movement we may be able to help. Schedule an appointment with one of our therapists.

Back Program: Nothing is worse than a painful back. You look normal, but you’re not. No one can see your injury, so they don’t understand what you are going through. Maybe the worst part is your own fear. You don’t understand what is happening to you and you worry about doing anything about it for fear of making things worse. Your medical doctor prescribes medication but that just covers symptoms; it doesn’t “cure” you.
Your therapist is an expert at examining and treating back pain. Physical therapy works, the research is clear on that point. There are numerous conditions that can be causing your pain. Our back pain program will be tailored to your specific problem and will include the following:
- Rapid pain relief program
- Patient education with proactive patient involvement
- Development of home treatment program
- Range of motion to improve nutrition to joints and discs
- Manual therapy to restore range of motion
- Comprehensive stabilization exercise program
- Lower extremity flexibility and stretching exercises
- Cardiovascular conditioning
- Discharge planning to ensure long term compliance

About Chest and Rib Pain: Our advice, if you experience pain in your chest or ribs, is to see your doctor immediately. There are multiple conditions, many serious, and a variety of symptoms that are not always easy to sort out which can be related to pain in the chest or ribs. Don’t fool with these symptoms, see your doctor. Now for the good news. There are numerous musculoskeletal conditions that can cause pain in the upper back (thoracic area) ribs, and chest and are easily treated in physical therapy. Pain coming from the muscles, ribs, or cartilage of the ribs is common. Musculoskeletal pain presents as atypical chest pain that is reproducible by springing of the chest, movement of the chest wall during deep respirations, movement of the limbs or by direct pressure. The causes are many but often consist of trauma, reaching far into flexion or extension, or inflammation of the cartilage. There are movements or injuries that can cause strain to the ligaments and joints where the ribs meet the spine (costo-transverse joints). People can wake up with an injury to these joints (a costo-transverse sprain). Sometimes it is caused by an awkward sleeping position or caused by turning in bed, or something that happened the day before but was too mild to cause significant pain right away.
For some people the pain can become recurring and ongoing, and for these people the problem can be a source of great frustration. Physical therapy can often give the relief the patient seeks.
When physical therapists see patients with chronic spine, chest or rib pain there are other factors to consider such as a slouched posture with forward drawn shoulders. This is often seen in people who are generally unfit with:
- poor thoracic core muscles
- increased thoracic curvature (kyphosis)
- sedentary occupations
- carrying loads for prolonged times
- and in scoliosis of the mid-back
To help these patients in the long term, apart from treating the underlying spinal problem with specific physical therapy, it is extremely important to address the postural problem and core muscle weakness.
Chest and Rib Program: As stated above, many conditions can cause upper spine, chest or rib pain. In addition to pain there may be significant loss of motion and associated functional limitations. Our chest and rib pain program will be tailored to your specific problem and will include the following:
- Rapid pain relief program and patient education
- Development of home treatment program
- Manual therapy to normalize range of motion
- Soft tissue mobilization to normalize tone
- Exercise to normalize movement and strength
About shoulder pain: The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body. However, it is an unstable joint because of the range of motion allowed. It is easily subject to injury because the ball of the upper arm is larger than the shoulder socket that holds it. To remain stable, the shoulder must be anchored by its muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Some shoulder problems arise from the disruption of these soft tissues as a result of injury or from overuse or underuse of the shoulder. Other problems arise from a degenerative process in which tissues break down and no longer function well.
Shoulder pain is an extremely common complaint. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the cause. If you are unsure of the cause of your shoulder pain, or if you do not know the specific treatment recommendations for your condition, you should seek medical attention. Treatment of these conditions must be directed at the specific cause of your problem. You should consider medical evaluation if your have any of the following symptoms:
- Inability to carry objects or use the arm
- Injury that causes deformity of the joint
- Shoulder pain that occurs at night or while resting
- Shoulder pain that persists beyond a few days
- Inability to raise the arm
- Swelling or significant bruising around the joint or arm
- Signs of an infection, including fever, redness, warmth
- Any other unusual symptoms
Shoulder Program: Shoulders are very complex. Rehabilitation is a team effort between the patient and the therapist. The therapist provides expertise and guidance. The patient supplies the sweat. - Rapid pain relief program and patient education
- Development of home treatment program
- Manual therapy to normalize range of motion
- Soft tissue mobilization to normalize tone
