I only collect '75 to '81 as that is when they stopped being made in Chatsworth.

Also, that's when the gussets stopped and the nice welds and the cool prismatic stickers. Its also when they stopped being American made.

Still think Calis are cool but not the original Mongoose.

Another thing that stopped being cool when they stopped being made in the USA are Fender guitars. Nothing from Mexico, Japan or other comes close.

They still make USA Fenders. They are just expensive. I wouldnt thumb my nose at a Japanese Fender, though. I'd even consider a Japanese Squier. :D

From what I've seen, I really like the midschool Mongoose Experts. I've been keeping my eye out for one actually. I dig the 25th anniversary Supergoose too. Funky frame, but I like it!

Doesn't matter where or when it was made to me, any Mongoose that isn't pacific made walmart garbage is worth owning

I have to stop at 92 things just got a little to crazy for me.  and IM MONGOOSE ALL THE WAY.  I like all the redline stuff from the past till now. and I have to go with GT to there stuff is still great.

I dunno, I have a 2012 Mongoose Solution 24 as my race bike. Other than a couple of small niggles (pedals and bars - the same things most people change! I also changed the gearing, but again personal preference) I reckon it's a solid bike and worthy of the Mongoose name.

Yeah the finish isn't perfect, but considering it cost me $600 AUD  complete (for reference you will pay $600 - $700 for a Standard 125r frame here) it's a ripper bike and pretty much the only option for a racer style full chromo complete 24"

That said I don't know if you guys get the higher end Mongoose's in the US of A?

The mid to late 90's aluminum Solutions were cool. The Mongoose 3-piece cro-mo (Solution?) cranks however were not. They broke if you looked at them the wrong way. Junk.

Nothing wrong with a Japanese Fender. They are getting pricey these days.

You can also buy USA made Fenders all day long.

Yep. Thats what I was sayin'. :) Lots of great Japanese guitars and Taiwanese bikes out there...and the price is only going up.

Funny how the Japanese guitars and Yaiwanese bikes were costcutting measures that people originally considered inferior and are now sought after to an extent. And we have the move to Chinese production to thank for it on both counts! :lol:

Well, from reading the posts, some really stick to old school American made while others do not mind Mid school or things being made in Japan or Taiwan.  To each their own I guess.  For now, until I can afford that old school Super goose I will ride this loop tail and have some fun.

Nice bike! Looks clean, which is more than I can say for my Mongoose.

I dont own any American bikes, but I love my Taiwanese rides. I have a Taiwanese 2000 Dyno Compe that I just adore. The thing rides so good that my daughter just bought a 1999 off of craigslist. Now we are dorky bike twins. :D

The Reynolds Express was made in Taiwan.  I used to own and race on one of his personal aluminum Newman frame Californians, which was also made in Taiwan.  It was an early run 1999 with the Twin Jet seat- and chainstays.  Before the Cali, I raced on an aluminum '97 Supergoose that was made in Taiwan.  They were all good frames that I never had any serious issues with.

Realistically, it's not about whether a bike frame was made in Taiwan or not, it's about how many people like or want one, then or now.  I'd say that the majority of "quality" bmx bikes were made overseas (in one way or another) through the 80's, with only the top minority being US made. It wasn't just Mongoose that went overseas, they almost  all did to one degree or another. Strangely enough, one of the Icons of BMX bikes was one of the first, Redline. Weren't they mostly Japanese and Taiwan produced (obviously with some exceptions) by 1982 or so?  I don't hear many, if any, giving them grief about that...   Having said that, I appreciate my 1985 500A for what it is, a mid line bike, not a custom fab job like a JMC or Champion.

Clearly there were many awesome US built frames, My MCS, Patterson, or my JMC cruiser are good examples, but realistically, those were not the same market niche as a Californian, a 500B, or a Mach 1.

bowersma31p, I guess, going back to my original post, I wanted to know if the build quality of my Mid School Mongoose was as good, worse or better than the Old School Mongoose bikes.  I knew at some point they started making them overseas and wondered if that "cheapened" them but as you stated, sooner or later they all ended up being made overseas. So are the mid school bikes build quality on par with the old school?

From a design point, it's kind of apples and oranges, really.  Technically, I's say the design was a newer more advanced one, and if the welds are good, and it's a cro-mo frame (remember, only the team and supergoose frames were originally ALL cro-mo) you could say the newer design is "better", albeit not necessarily more desirable.  from a weight, geometry and design standpoint it is a better frame. Build quality completely depends on other factors that are beyond our, or in fact Mongoose's control... how much sleep did the welder get? How much is the shift supervisor getting for running the production line 15% faster than it should be running? Did the tube fit finisher get laid the night before? Why didn't he? Was the QC guy asleep when the frame went through?  All these things could (and did) happen here too. Typically you see it when a frame tube ruptures or a weld breaks, but sometimes it shows up in odd ways, like a frame having the wrong brackets, etc.

We're talking Taiwanese production here, but how much different, really would these scenarios be for a frame made in, let's say, Mexico ( Kastan and others), or even better,  the US (Bill Bastian / FMF) for example? Would you say that anyone with a major monkey on his back  (let's just say, for instance a raging Cocaine addiction) would be able to do his very best work over and over consistently? And yet, it does happen. Suffice to say, quality goods can and are produced in ways and places that would surprise us.

I agree with all that has been said except u said only the team and supergoose were the only chromoly frames made ..But You forgot the Mongoose Pro class Mongoose 10th anniversary Mongoose Eric rupe These frames are all chromoly tubing...But on another notesome of the old hutch frame sets were made in japan and the new hutch frame sets are made in japan... But still are nice bikes

When I said Originally, I was referring to before the 1983 redesign. I.E, the early Motomag, Team, and Supergoose with the first gen drop outs and the double front gusset. The Motomag frames had a Cro Mo front triangle with a mild steel rear.

There certainly have been plenty of Mongoose models with all Cro-Mo frames over the years. For instance, my 1990 Cro-Mo Mongoose Solution.

In the end, the quality of the frame does not have much to do with the country of origin, so much as the quality of materials and personnel who build it.

Ya but the carbon frames and the kinesis frames were usa, thats what I was referring to. Didn't know about the craig reynolds frame though.
