From 1952 until 1963 Mr Potato Head was meant to be used with real vegetables. In 1964 government regulations concerning children playing with their food caused Hasbro to include a plastic vegetable. I think the sets with the plastic vegetables were actually more successful they added several characters to the Potato Head family. The original Mr Potato Head was actually Mr Styrofoam Head. He came with a round piece of Styrofoam to use for a head. See photo 3. An actual potato that I just bought for this post is in photo #2. One needs a small potato, this one is less than half a pound. Otherwise the body will have trouble supporting the weight. He will go well with Mr Steak.

mikelv85, 10 years agoI had one...but we all know how bad a real rotten potato can smell...lol. So the plastic ones were a bit more practical. :)
racer4four, 10 years agoHe is wonderful. I never knew about the styrofoam option. That wouldn't fly these days - biddums might eat it, or break it up and inhale it or stick it up their nose or something. At least a potato rots, albeit smelling bad as Mike says.
fortapache, 10 years agoThank you very much Mike. The plastic heads worked much better I think.
fortapache, 10 years agoThank you very much racer4four. That styrofoam head got a lot of use has lots of holes in it.

BigHead, 3 years agoI was just talking to a friend about Mr. Potato Head, and I remembered that the one we had as kids was meant for a real potato. When the plastic heads came out, we didn't like it as much. I did a search to make sure I was right about that, and, here it is! Just what I was looking for, and thank you for posting this!
