Lore[]

The Pit existed by the mid-13th century.[1]

The Pit had been converted into an underground arena by the Great Enmity. During this period, a blood-crazed fighter resided in the Pit, and bathed himself in the blood of all who entered. Driven by pain, his victims left arrows in their bodies, unwilling to part with the masochistic agony.[2] The Brawler also partook in the fights here.[3]

The Pit is an Act I zone in Diablo II, located in the Tamoe Highlands. There is no waypoint for this place, so the easiest way to get there is to take the Outer Cloister waypoint and make your way from there to the Highlands.

The Pit consists of two levels - Level 1, and Level 2. On level 2 of The Pit there is a golden chest (drops many items). The Pit is a very popular location for Magic Finding, because it is one of the few locations that have the highest area level in the game (85 in Hell). It is a highly popular level 85 area, as it is relatively accessible from a nearby waypoint (Outer Cloister or Black Marsh being the closest), and is relatively safe--allowing players to sacrifice killing power and survivability for the sake of donning more magic find gear. In Hell difficulty, the Pit is devoid of any Poison or Magic immune enemies, making it a popular farming area for builds such as the Novamancer and Berserker.

In Diablo II: Resurrected, the Pit can become terrorized. While it is arguably nothing special as a terror zone--the reason it is a desirable farming location is because of its area level, and terror zones automatically raise all area levels to be two levels higher than the player--its reasonable monster density and size still makes it a fairly good terror zone.
