The Real Meaning of "Another Brick in the Wall" By Pink Floyd4/20/2014 93 Comments The majority of the world believes “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd is about students rebelling against the school system. In Walter Benjamin's essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” states that when you reproduce an art then the original isn't as special and the meaning of the original is ruined which also ruins the arts aura. Music is an art because the musicians use their creativity and emotions just like an artist does when he makes a painting. There have been so many covers of Pink Floyd's “Another Brick in the Wall” that it has caused the true meaning of the song to be ignored. Alice Cooper covers this song on stage right after he sings his own song “Schools Out.” That makes people think “Another Brick in the Wall” is really about students rebelling against teachers. I am going to analyze the true meaning of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" and how the reproductions of this song ruined the deep meaning it had originally. Pink Floyd's Members and Creating the Song Pink Floyd is a very popular rock band from London England. The band was formed in 1965 and it's original members were Nick Mason, Syd Barrett, Richard Wright and Roger Waters. In 1967 David Gilmour joined as their fifth member. A year later Syd Barrett left the band due to mental health problems. After he left, Roger Waters became the primary lyric writer. The most successful single Pink Floyd wrote was released in 1979 called, “Another Brick In the Wall Part 2.” It sold more than 4 million copies worldwide. Rolling Stones magazine put the song in its list of 500 greatest songs of all time as number 375. The album that song was placed in was called “The Wall”. In an interview with Roger Waters, he explains where the concept of The Wall was inspired from: “Well, the idea for "The Wall' came from ten years of touring, rock shows, I think, particularly the last few years in '75 and in '77 we were playing to very large audiences, some of whom were our old audience who'd come to see us play, but most of whom were only there for the beer, in big stadiums, and, er, consequently it became rather an alienating experience doing the shows. I became very conscious of a wall between us and our audience and so this record started out as being an expression of those feelings.” During one of the concerts in 1977 a fan was invited on stage and the fan spat on Roger's face. That caused Roger to feel distanced from his fans and build a wall. According to the band, the "wall" is the self-isolating barrier we build over the course of our lives, and the "bricks in the wall" are the people and events that turn us inward and away from others.” Pink Floyd created a movie called “The Wall” released in 1982 which features the character, Pink who is a troubled rock star that is going through events that make up the story of the song “Another Brick in the Wall.” Part 1 Analysis of Song and Film Roger Water's father left to go fight in World War II and was killed when Roger was only five months old. So Roger never got to have any memories of his father, he just has photos of him. That put a brick in his wall. Which is one of the reasons it caused Roger to shut him self off from the world and isolate himself. In Part One of the song, Roger Water's voice is so intense when he sings those lyrics. I feel he is upset with his dad for leaving him and his mom to go to war. He never got to know his father and grew up without him. That caused Roger to build a brick in his wall. He had to forget about that part of him that really wanted to have his dad in his life. If you just listen to the song you won't feel the aura of sadness. In the movie, “The Wall” Part 1 of “Another Brick In the Wall” you will see the sadness of those lyrics. It shows a young boy,(Pink) and a women in church. The women is Pink's mother who is crying at the loss of her husband and Pink is playing with his toy airplane at church. After church his mother drops him off at the park and he sees an older man that resembles the father figure that is not in his life. Pink goes up to him, grabs his hand and asks him to put him on the ride the other kids are on at the park. He thinks this man is his real dad. So he follows the man and his son around the park and doesn't understand why the man is ignoring him and only paying attention to his son. Pink grabs the man's hand but, he pushes him away. The little boy grabs his hand again and the man tells him to go away. Then Pink walks away and sits on a swing that he needs someone to push him on it. He looks over at the man swinging his son on the swing and he feels very alone. Part 2 Analysis of Song and Film The lyrics in Part 2 are towards every person and everything that did not let Roger be the person he is. The people that made him feel restricted in life. That is where the analogy of teacher student in the song come from. Teachers don't let students misbehave and be themselves. He is saying that authority figures are the peoples' bricks in the walls. The deep meaning of the song is that the teacher actually represents the government and the students are the people. The government doesn't let people do what they want and the government wants to control everyone. The film of “ The Wall” “Another Brick in the wall Part 2” became the music video. I think Pink Floyd released Part 2 as a music video because it was the most popular part of the song. The character Pink in the film for part two is in class daydreaming about students marching together and wearing masks. The students all look like clones wearing the same creepy masks. The students are marching blindly and they fall into a meat grinder. Toward the end Pink is dreaming about the students burning down the school and destroying their chairs and desks. I think this means that eventually people get really tired of being controlled by the government which results in war, strikes, and other violent events. Pink wakes up from his daydream when a teacher smacks his hand. When listening to Part 2 of "Another Brick in the Wall" in the car you probably just feel its about rebelling against the school system. When watching the video you will see that the clones of students and the teacher shouting represent the true meaning which is about the government controlling the people. Part 3 Analysis of Song and Film The lyrics of Part 3 is intense. Pink is telling himself that he is able to live without all the things that he has always wanted in his life like, love from his father. He is saying taking medication won't help, but will make him feel worse. He has had a hard life and built this wall that no one else can hurt him. In the 90 minute movie “The Wall” the character Pink encountered his father dying in the war, his mother being overprotective, having a hard school life, his wife cheating on him, and the road manager has to put him on drugs so he can perform well. Pink gets tired of feeling so weak and breaks down his wall so he can feel free. In Part 3 of "Another Brick in the Wall" video it shows the flashbacks Pink is having. All the events in his life that caused him to build a wall. He is tearing down that wall. Conclusion You probably never knew this song has a really deep meaning to it. With all the reproductions of this song it ruined the true meaning of it. I agree when Walter Benjamin said, “When the age of mechanical reproduction separated art from its bass cult, the semblance of its autonomy disappeared forever.” He is saying that ever since we started to replicate art the deep meaning was lost and people just looked at the surface of the art. When Alice Cooper sings this song with “Schools Out” people will look at the surface of “Another Brick in the Wall” which is about children not wanting to go to school, get an education and not let themselves be bossed by teachers. People don't look into the deep meaning of it. Also since Part 2 was the most popular it makes people not care about Part 1 and 3 which causes the story of the song to be ruined. Watching the film, "The Wall" has an aura of sadness which is what "Another brick in the Wall" is. The wall that people build when they go through bad events in life. When you just listen to the song without watching the film you won't feel the aura of sadness. You will probably feel like “Yeah I hated school!” or just get happy because the song has a nice melody. When an art is created it shouldn't be replicated because the real emotions the artist used to make the song will be truly unknown unless someone does research and analyze, but most people are too busy in their lives to do that. When someone makes an art it shouldn't be replicated, so people will be able to truly grasp its aura and feel what the artist felt. However, I believe that The Wall works on multiple levels and here only one level has been actually explored. I think the argument can be made that the bricks in the wall also represent individuals in a societal structure. We in fact are nothing more than a brick in the wall, a cog in the machine, or as The Police said so well, a lemming packed into a shiny metal box. We have bought into the norms of the culture and have become nothing more than an indistinguishable brick that looks and behaves in the same way as every other brick in the wall. We are lifeless and dead, as is a brick. I think that this argument can be made throughout the album as we here pieces of the cultural influence are played in the background of "Is there Anybody Out there?" and the question is continually asked....is there anybody out there. The beauty of this album, above all others, is not that it is a concept album, but that it speaks to the listener on multiple levels and at different points in one's life. Yes it is a story about rebellion against cultural norms, but also about the internal conflict that each of us struggle with in defining who we are, apart from the socialization that we are subjected to in our lives. Reply Jonathan 9/19/2020 04:56:56 amThis is what I was thinking as well. Not only that, but when you listen to the lyrics it's basically the children chanting to the teachers to leave them alone. This song came out in a time when there was a lot of scandals in the public education system (or whatever it's called in England) and this song, to me, is kind of like a communal statement. I agree with the analysis of the title. We're all just bricks in the wall, but in this case - again - they're speaking to the teachers. You're no better than the kids is basically what they're saying, in my opinion. I've always learned that the listener tends to search for a deeper meaning that isn't really there. Actually the meaning of lyrics is often times far more 'superficial' than one would like to believe. Reply André 3/24/2023 01:24:17 pm"I've always learned that the listener tends to search for a deeper meaning that isn't really there. Anthony Sowell 5/4/2021 09:47:56 amYour synopsis is the way that I interpreted this. Initially I thought that the whole album may have come about because of the mental illness that Syd Barrett suffered from. Roger Waters may also have personalized this to reflect some of his internalizations but that may be an effort to protect the Barrett family. Reply Madmax link 2/14/2022 08:48:44 pmFirstly I would not consider myself a Pink Floyd fan, that's probably gonna annoy a lot of folk from the start who might think I've no place on here but that doesn't make sense, it's about giving opinions on a song. Besides, I think a lot of people consider themselves Pink Floyd fans as a fashion accessory but anyway. when I first heard the song I thought it was simply about rebellion against persecution, I'm just talking about the part they play on the radio. When I learned about Sid Barrett and watched the animations I thought it was also to do with mental mental illness. When I got older and had t listened to the song for years and suffered more mental problems myself I thought reflecting on the song and the animation that along with what I've mentioned, the "Wall" itself reprented negative life experiences that consume the mind to the point of having difficulty finding a way to see out of them at times, each thought being a brick of the enclosure. This had parallels with what I read with what the band apparently said and the person writing the initial article but I don't agree with him when he says that the wall is a barrier which is built out of the thoughts that he builds to protect hm from danger that seems like trying to build a wall out if fire when you're scared of it. More like a prison keeping you in that you want to escape from . I see Pink Floyd as influential and artistic, like a good article. The words have more of an effect than the rest of the music,....for me of course. Thought provoking, and intelligent. I sound like a fan now but I'm into other bands a lot more 😊, some uplifting, some happy sad from all era's. Dont even know if anyone is out there so to speak or if I'll be on here again, just seeing what folk think, cheers✌️👍 jill pattiz 3/12/2022 05:33:05 amThe Ode to Syd Barrett was "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" . Reply Steve Robinson 8/20/2016 03:51:04 amThe wall is representative of Roger Waters' school days at the Cambridgeshire High School for Boys in Cambridge (now Hills Road VIth Form College). Those of us who attended the same school recognise the English Teacher in the classroom although irl he taught modern languages. The behaviour of that teacher in the film is wholly represnetative of his behaviour in real life. In Waters' time the school was seen as a kind of production line. The students left to go to University - anything else and you were a failure. No room for individualism and much brutality from teachers and older boys. Many of the teachers had fought in the war and were psychologically damaged as a result. The teacher portrayed in the film had "Arbeit Mach Frei" written above the door to his form and kept a locked cupboard full of wartime memorabilia in his classroom. I once swapped 2 live .5 cannon shells from an ex American Aifield with an mortar bomb canister. You can see now why the walls probably refer to all kinds of things - but the school is a key link. I am not interested in fan interpretations. Reply Christy 11/17/2016 01:13:12 pmThat does not mean other people's analysis should be pitied? it matters because it can expand the input of it. maybe pink floyd wanted us to figure it out and put it together, maybe use our brains and be creative into creating different inputs. we should not have everything explained to us, we should do some thinking of our own. Reply Paul link 1/5/2017 02:28:35 pmAgreed, Christy. In my experience, the real intention of art is to inspire. The artist (in the case of music) writes it, certainly with their own meaning involved, and when it's well done they'll create it in a way that has an element of universal appeal and can bear affect on a variety of listeners. RW achieved that when he wrote The Wall, and Floyd definitely achieved that with the fantastic, timeless music they put out. If the listener can take something from the music to derive meaning and their own interpretation, great....if that's achieved with the album artwork, that's great too because that's why the artist put those images there....and if the words can move someone to deduce their own meaning, that's where the poetry of the music can have its heaviest hand and staying power. Bob Dylan would tell you this. Neil Peart would tell you this....and Roger Waters I'm pretty sure would tell you the same thing as well. Chris Dee 5/24/2017 08:16:48 pmI agree....WTF....fans seem to agonize over the lyrics of MA NY songs. I really found the concept of building the wall, living within it, and then breaking it very interesting. That was really metaphorical of our real life. Reply Paul link 1/5/2017 02:54:05 pmI think the writer of this post hits close to the mark, but I also agree with other commenters that there's added layers to this 3-part song. Certainly Roger's experiences in his school system inform the piece, and you can find similar accounts of the harsh realities of parts of the UK grammar school system (over a decade past that of Roger's) in The Smiths catalog along with Morrisey's autobiography. However as the writer suggests, it isn't necessarily to be taken literally....and that's the beauty of the piece. You can look at it and see accounts of a horrific grammar school experience, or you can see it as a metaphor for the government controlling society. While the 3-part tune (especially Pt. 2) works on its own, I believe it has more staying power as part of The Wall album as a whole, as the listener accompanies the artist (aka Roger) on this painful twisty turny journey. This was the first "concept album" I ever picked up and dove deeply into, and while much of it resonates with me to this day -- and while if "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2' or "Comfortably Numb" pop on the radio I'll keep the dial tuned all the way to the conclusion -- I have a couple reasons sitting down with the album from beginning to end. For starters, I find the original album to be a HUGE downer....I really can't dive into it unless I'm in a certain kind of mood. This has been offset since I picked up the live version (Is Anybody Out There) of the album, which I really enjoy and find more appealing than the original album. My other complaint is that there doesn't seem to be any happy conclusion. I know about the voice talking at the end and concluding at the beginning when you put on the record, to simulate the recording as a looped infinite whole, but in a way that makes things worse....because (if we're here also talking about "artist's intentions") that only means the hero in the story is taken through the grind of the torture all over again. Finally, there's no humor in The Wall -- ANYWHERE, as far as I can tell. No funny moments, aside from an interpretation of dark humor in the line "Do you want to call the cops? Do you think it's time I stopped?" in "One of My Turns." I don't know if it was Roger's intention to throw levity into that tune with those lines....and IMHO the listener needs to have a very high level of familiarity with The Wall to not gloss over that in the middle of all the other effects and ear action taking place throughout. So I don't know if those are really complaints as much as observations, but my thoughts on The Wall and my approach to it over 30 years after first hearing it I think are more testament to its affect as a piece of art and staying power; since I know it has disturbing passages in it, and I know it challenges me to the effect that I have to put on a "game face" to sit through it. To me, that shows how brilliant and unique it is not just in Floyd's musical canon, but in the whole arc of musical history. Reply Jonathan 11/21/2020 04:22:47 pmWell, Paul. I think you're a substantial writer at first, let me state this much. Please allow me to say thanks for your post. It's rarely that I read such an insightful opinion. This also answers your question at the end whether you're complaining or stating objections. I instantly felt like you were doing the latter. To me your post came across as very subjective and I therefore value your piece. I don't think you made any wrong observations and the fact that you've heard this song 30 years ago, testifies to your mature opinion. I'm glad you shared this with us, so I guess I just wanna say thanks. Some guy from Holland. Reply Oct 1/13/2017 06:03:09 pm3,14 approaches or resonates to imperfect circle's (octets). A brick is composed of 3,14 thus, imperfect octets. so you can guess the true meanings the authors felt like sharing. The meaning is closer to your own imperfect reality.. not the others. Dont drag your own reality into others. Those may drag yours! Reply peterparker 2/17/2017 04:02:22 amGreat post!!! Especially, the comparision with government, authorities, and how democracy functions, in real. After watching the video, I have observed another thing. The scene where teacher is having dinner with his wife, and he spits out something, keeps on the table, but his wife asks him to take it back. My analogy of this is that, because, he is being controlled by the authority, he also has the desire to do so. And because, the weak gets ruled by strong, therefore, by controlling weak, people feel themselves strong. Reply Darla 2/19/2017 06:23:33 pmHello, please post this article to FB Darla-Jean O'Rourke. Reply Jim link 9/20/2017 10:14:02 pmThe tag line of the song is the clearly grammatically incorrect double negative "We don't need no education" Floyd are all highly educated OxBridge graduates and the implication there would be that we need MORE and BETTER education generally. The song is a mish mash of ideas I feel held together by the solo and then tied into the context of a concept album. The idea of a barrier between them and their growing audience of pissheads as Waters saw them and even being spat at by an audience member is a reflection of behaviour that Floyd who are quite frankly a bit posh and snobby would see as beneath them. The implication that the wall had nothing to do with the Berlin wall and is just a metaphor is nonsense as Waters is highly politically motivated. "Hey you WHITE HOUSE, ha ha charade you are" are the lyrics on the current tour. Also Gilmour released his first solo album in 1978 due to growing discontent at his songs being overshadowed by Waters and the pair has infamous fights over 'the wall' more than any other album, Waters left after 1983's AWFUL "The final cut" which is really his first solo album effectively handing the band over to Gilmour. There was clear division there too. Reply Roland 1/21/2018 12:54:03 amI'll stick to the the widespread meaning behind the song, that of children getting brainwashed, When we over complicate things to try to reach the truth there is always the risk that we get so enthralled by our cognitive skills that we actually give the truth a wide berth. Reply Jordan 3/22/2018 05:00:10 pmThis song, and record has to do with Masonic traditions. The "Wall" has to do with the "base" block, floor, or WALL, it is a "square" or very basic way of thinking, "reptilian" if you will. I believe the Wall gets built, and then destroyed in concerts? I believe this to be a positive message from a good, and caring Mason. He is telling us that we must break down that square way of thinking, realign ourselves with our consciousness, and seek enlightenment, seek THE TRUTH. Reply Rodrigo 1/8/2019 08:47:53 amIf you do a little research on the piece you are appreciating you should connect to the artist´s truth. But lets don't forget that art is a source of inspiration.. and reinventing an existing piece is another way of creation, because every person has its own emotional baggage to channel. We are all connected, and everything is a remix Reply Gneale 2/7/2019 07:52:41 pmIn the newly anti-education environment in the US I see the true meaning of this song finally. Why waste resources on education of individuals who will do nothing with it? After all they are just bricks. The circular logic argument at the end of the song meat->pudding and pudding->meat is a sarcastic explanation of what life is like as an uneducated brick being condescended, sanguinated and fattened. Reply Libertarian Gun Toter link 12/4/2019 05:16:35 amToo bad Waters, like so many others brainwashed by mainstream media propaganda, thinks it's the political right that are trying to control us when the enlightened know "there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream -- the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order -- or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism." Ronald Reagan was hated by Waters but wonder upon wonders -- Reagan was the one responsible for tearing down the Berlin and bringing the Soviets to their knees. F**k all that though. Classic liberals like Thomas Jefferson knew exactly what Reagan did, but liberals of today have turned into Pink Floyd's Animals. They're pigs because they are the elite controlling the poor sheep, they're dogs because it's the left that are the ones forcing thought control through laws and force, and they're the sheep because they are letting the greatest country on the planet be consumed by idiotic (AOC) utopian dreams of socialism which only kills. Waters probably hates me too because I believe his music speaks to gun-toting Libertarian dogs who will never surrender their rights on a deeper level than any Demon-rat sheep or RINO pigs. Reply Harry N 5/8/2020 08:41:20 amMy revelation about the wall is totally independent of the details of Pink's story. Rather, it is the more about universal theme of isolation. Things that cause us extreme pain can be used to wall ourselves off from other people, to "protect" us. As those bricks get higher and higher, the extreme isolation causes a kind of insanity. Tearing down the wall and exposing a person is the worst kind of fright. However, it needs to happen. Sooner or later. That's why to myself, the ending is bittersweet, shocking horrible, but ultimately for the best. Reply Alissa 8/17/2021 12:03:18 pmMy little sister somehow managed to teach herself to read at age 4, and at 15 I was independently dedicating myself to 10+ hours of schooling daily... 🤷 Not everybody puts the same amount of energy into the same things--But humans do have a natural curiosity and inclination to learn. People wouldn't just stop learning without a teacher over their shoulder. Most school systems have a way of squelching that innate passion. I agree "fuck schools" isn't the way to go...but something's gotta give--there isn't enough freedom for kids to explore their interests and find themselves... Real education allows plenty of room for that...and with that freedom, people foster that natural love for educating themselves. (Many?--) Teachers (--let's be honest--Some do a shit job) are incredibly crucial to society--but we can't underestimate natural curiosity. Lucia Lipovská 5/15/2022 11:12:42 pmAlan, yet another brick in the Wall.... PC 9/21/2020 02:55:59 amLoved reading as a fan! Reply Theresa link 3/25/2021 07:57:51 amThat is what life is about! Analyzing what you feel is the deepest meaning. Not only in lyrics but, in life itself! So just sit down, relax, put the headphones on and enjoy. Reply Samir 4/1/2021 06:35:59 amToo much use of quotation marks, such as "Another Brick In the Wall", "The Wall" and "Schools Out". Why do you have to put the song titles or album titles in quotes all the time? You're also referring to the film as "The Wall". This creates confusion and makes it difficult to follow your references and your logic. It's as if you're writing code for a computer, a bad one at that. There is also one part of the text in particular that's repeating what has been stated in a previous paragraph, as if it was copy and pasted. By the way, that should be "School's Out" and not "Schools Out". Not only is "School's Out" grammatically correct but it's how it's actually spelled on the Alice Cooper album. Also, why do you mix "him self" and "himself"? Be consistent! There are other flaws with this text, but these few should be a reason enough for a review. Now, onto the topic at hand. As much as mechanical reproduction ruins the originality of an art, so do interpreters! Let people think for themselves, let them ask their own questions, find their own answers and come to their own conclusions. Why do I get the feeling this is a sales pitch for buying the film?... Thank you for telling me what to think, what to listen to, what film to see, and how to feel about it. You're doing us all a great service! It would seem as if it bothers you that people don't understand the "true" meaning of the song, or the fact that Part 2 is the most popular part. So you're here to teach us a lesson? It's no wonder people rebel against the school system. People in general don't like being told what to do and how to think, or what to like. Basically, if you don't conform to a set of rules and templates you become an outcast. That's not right, by any measure. People that think differently have proven time and time again over the history of mankind that they are the true leaders and inventors that drive this world forward. Of course, you have the right to open your mind about things and write whatever you want. It's hard to argue against it. This is the very nature of writing, expressing your own beliefs, ideas and understanding of the world... a very human thing. But it is not without consequences. A written word is a powerful thing, as is a spoken word. It influences people to think one way or another, changing their perception of the world, and sometimes even their behavior, for good or for worse, creating cause for war and a cause for peace. In my opinion, it's best to have people form their own ideas, their own interpretation of things and events, without too much oversight and control. Of course, it's impossible to form original ideas in complete isolation, without any exposure to the external world and influence of others. To paraphrase Bruce Lee, you should allow life itself to be your teacher! After all, this is how the song came into existence, by Roger Waters' own experiences in life. Nothing could have prepared him for what was awaiting him in life, and if he had completed his "wall" (complete isolation) before the incident in 1977, he most likely would not have written the song in the first place, because he would not have been influenced to do so. But what do I know? I'm just a guy from Bosnia telling you how the world works from my point of view. So to everyone reading this I say just go out there, live your own life and form your own ideas. Then you too can come back a bit "wiser" and preach to others, through songs, through writing or otherwise, about life, about meaning of songs and whatnot and look like a smart puppy. Reply Mqdmax link 2/15/2022 02:41:33 pmI'm not targeting you but I've read two of you're comments on here and both have annoyed me well, this one just in parts at least. I know you don't like that the guy is speaking in a way as if he is talking about fact and not opinion but chill out with the grammar assassination .The quotation marks were used to show that he was talking about titles, written by someone else, hardly like reading confusing computer code as well, if I can understand it I'm sure you could? really annoying and condescending as fuck. That kind of attitude makes people scared to write anything or speak as they are scared of being criticized,it had a bullying effect educate , don't humiliate , it's wrong! especially when I've spotted at least one mistake in youre grammar, there'll be more in mine but I'm not trying to be a smart ass. I do after all that being said agree with a lot you say, let people make up their own mind, form their own opinions, .......by the way, if you really want that to happen I've got a tip for you,.......don't patronise people, they will think a look clearer with confidence, I'm not well read, but actually experienced life first hand, you don't seem like a bad guy, you should have just told the writer you didn't like the way he went about things.... I was going through depression and could identify with building walls to protect myself from everyone. Needless to say I was pretty unpleasant and my only friend was alcohol. Luckily, I was never one to become addicted to things and was able to change it all. But again a big fan!!! I always knew the story was sad and there was a always the feeling of loss and isolation. I’m glad I watched it again today and I really wish my daughter would try and watch it now that she’s older maybe it won’t scare her. Yes, the people vote them in, well, some but you can't say their motives are people orientated all the time, company orientated for sure. And mushrooms can make it a living thing, but Pink Floyd has this way of bleeding out emotion in some of those legendary albums and I personally felt it in highschool. Reply Brenda Ann Hughes 11/13/2021 11:52:04 amWhile everyone can get some kind of meaning from things in their own way, it's good to know what the artist meant. I think it's alot better than what it appeared to be from what others said about it. I always felt it was a very bitter/angry song that left no room for working together and towards solutions. It's also good to know that in the story, they wanted the wall taken down eventually. If we allow walls to remain in our lives, it's really a very unhappy place to be & doesn't really improve anything. "Give and it shall be given unto you,..." Reply Henry 12/24/2021 08:13:33 amI'm going to nit-pick here - Pink Floyd were mostly from Cambridge I think, not London - "I feel he is upset with his dad for leaving him and his mom to go to war" He was probably conscripted. Also fighting the German army wouldn't exactly have been an easy choice - "Rolling Stone" magazine, not "Rolling Stones" Reply Dale Ross 12/26/2021 02:38:24 pmWe don''t need no education We don't need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teachers leave them kids alone Hey! Reply LEN TERRY 3/27/2022 01:42:26 pmIf you Love music, you sit and Listen to the harmony of the instruments playing and to the words of a story being told. It is not up to the listener to take the responsibility and claim to know why or how a song writer choses to write a particular song. eg An artist makes a painting with many colors, a one Tone color , now that would be pretty boring. A song writer can use many facets some happy and some sad, parts are their own reflections in the songs. Keep in mind everyone can hear and feel something different from a song. People can Live life with feelings and can relate to some songs words in which can relate to how they are feeling at that moment in time. Not all paintings are the same and therefore songs can be manipulated and misinterpreted too. Take Sid Barrett for an example, Maybe He inspired the (Wish You were Here) song. Clearly can be recognized of how a Family of Bandmates were feeling, at a moment spiraling down in time. Artists create for people to observe and enjoy Not to be dissected and scrutinized. If you could play an instrument, you would understand. Myself have seen the most darkest days any human should ever see. Tonight A gunner sits alone. Enough said , Respect and Listen to Enjoy Take heed to the Dream ! The song is about more than the school system, and as time goes on, the larger meaning is lost. 2. The film adds an emotional layer (sadness) that is not brought forth fully in the album. 3. The wall, comprised of it’s various bricks, is a force of isolation. Most of you who have commented should be ashamed of yourselves not just for picking apart these well presented ideas, but for your ignorance in not understanding the work itself. I also write songs no one’s ever seen about the ignorance in society. All we have to do is look at the news with people waving flags about freedom, these people are in denial there is no freedom under any worldly government . with all the wars throughout human history there’s never been peace. The Bible has the answers but religion hides those answers so people stay ignorant and continue to pay the price for what’s already free. I loved reading about the original feelings that inspired the creation of this song. The solemnity of this song is made sense with the explanation of it being more directed towards self-isolation as a result of traumatic experience, rather than purposeful in expressing non-conformity and freedom. The aspect of freedom is represented, however, in the sense of providing oneself with the freedom to advance in life as though these painful experiences have not been lived through.
