Reasons behind breaking the coconut
Each step involved in the ‘coconut breaking’ ritual has a deep meaning attached to it.
In the first step, the husk is torn away from the coconut. This symbolizes the inner wishes and materialistic desires that we need to let go of.
Next, breaking the coconut by smashing it on the ground symbolizes our ego that we need to break.
Once the coconut cracks open, coconut water flows out of it. This symbolizes all the negativity inside us that should flow out of the mind and body.
The soft inner part of the coconut symbolizes peace and is also distributed as prasad among the people.
