The Reason Your Mascara Is Smudging May Not Be What You Think

.

As someone who struggled for years with mascara smudging and running, I can tell you that there is more than one reason you may find yourself with dreaded panda eyes, and switching to waterproof isn’t always the answer. Here we will dive a little deeper into the reasons your mascara smudges and how to prevent it.

Why does my mascara smudge?

  • You have been crying (hopefully tears of joy)
  • Your eyes are watery due to sensitivity or allergy
  • Your eye cream or moisturizer could be breaking it down
  • You have oily eyelids

How can I stop my mascara from smudging?

If tears are expected, then waterproof mascara can really save the day. Experts recommend only occasional use, as removal can be difficult and result in loss of lashes. We like this one by Lancome.

Lancome Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara

If your eyes are watery after you apply mascara, you could be sensitive to the formula. The most common culprit is fragrance. We like this fragrance free one from Clinique. It also comes in a waterproof formula.

If you tend to smudge more than run, and waterproof formulas don’t do the trick, it could be your skincare. These days we are layering more lotions and potions, from serums to SPF. Makeup artists suggest lighter formulas for the day that work well under makeup. Dabbing away any access, especially on the eyelids can help. We like this ultra light eye cream for under makeup.

Biossance Squalane + Peptide Eye Gel

And finally, the reason you might not of thought of, you have oily skin. After years of being told to wear waterproof, yet still getting racoon eyes, I finally realized it was my oily lids that were the problem. If you think about it, you need an oil based makeup remover to break down waterproof formulas. So it makes sense that those of us with oily skin have this issue. Here are a few tips I have learned that have really helped.

  1. Try an eyeshadow primer. Long wearing formulas absorb oil and help your total eye look last all day.
  2. Choose a formula that is on the drier side. They contain powders and polymers that hold up better against oil.
  3. If you wear mascara on your lower lashes, try a separate formula made for that purpose.
  4. If you wear concealer, try finishing with powder made for the under eye area.
