The LCS lock in tournament was introduced at the start of the 2021 season amongst the heavy changes to the league's format and schedule. Despite the LCS reverting back to its original format, the league decided to keep the lock in tournament after positive fan and player reception.

The tournament format is the same as 2021, two groups of five will kick off the event and will then move on to a playoff. Starting with Group A, this group has far more variance given the strength of the teams. The 2021 summer champions 100 Thieves will face stiff competition from the likes of Cloud9 and TSM. Unfortunately for the two latter sides, they are unlikely to field their starting rosters due to visa issues.

Nevertheless, both sides will field competitive rosters and will still have a solid showing in the LCS lock in. Moving onto Group B, all eyes will be on Team Liquid. The four-time LCS champions have put together a star-studded roster. At the centre of it, arguably the leagues best player in Søren "Bjergsen" Bjerg. Team Liquid is expected to be playing with their intended roster and should be heavy favorites out the gate.

Vitality vs Fnatic headlines LEC week one schedule

While there will be plenty of exciting games on the opening week of the LEC, the huge one that sticks out like a sore thumb is Team Vitality vs Fnatic. Both sides made huge acquisitions during the offseason and both are a favorite to take the crown in March.

Starting with Vitality, as they did with their CSGO roster, the European organization spent a large amount of money to put together Europes latest super team. Here is the roster Vitality put together ahead of the 2022 season.

  • Top lane: Barney "Alphari" Morris
  • Jungle: Oskar "Selfmade" Boderek
  • Mid lane: Luka "Perkz" Perković
  • Bot lane: Matyáš "Carzzy" Orság
  • Support: Labros "Labrov" Papoutsakis

Moving onto Fnatic, they have made some major changes ahead of the LEC spring split. Martin "Wunder" Nordahl Hansen, Iván "Razork" Martín Díaz and Marek "Humanoid" Brázda have all made the jump to the black and orange side.

With every top team in the LEC making huge changes to their roster, everything is up for grabs in the opening weeks of the LEC. G2 and MAD Lions will also feature in week one, though the back-to-back LEC champs have flown under the radar after losing a couple of their top stars.

Riot Games have shared that the start of the LEC 2022 will be played remotely in response to a surge in cases in Berlin.
