About the Soul Urge (Heart's Desire) number and the calculation method.

Note that vowels are pronounced from free-flowing breath: Aaaaaa; Eeeeeee; Iiiiiiiiii, Oooooo; and Uuuuuu. Consonants, on the other hand, have a distinct beginning or end. They are sharply begun or sharply finished. For example: B, D, K, P, S, T, and X.

There is a distinction in consonants, a harder edge than the soft and flowing vowels. The vowels reveal the tender you; your love, caring, and vulnerability. Consonants reveal certain of your characteristics that, among other things, shield your more vulnerable parts.

Your Soul Urge number shows your underlying motivation, or the general intention behind many of your actions. It dramatically influences the choices you make in life. The influence of your Soul Urge is everywhere - in your career, your environment, friendships, and life style.

Your Soul Urge number is considered one of the three core name numbers in your chart.

The vowels are A, E, I, O, and U. All other letters are consonants, except, in some cases, the letter Y.

The letter Y is inherently vacillating in its nature and usage (as the shape of the letter symbolizes), and consequently is sometimes a vowel, sometimes a consonant, depending upon how it is used in the name.

You can learn more about the Y as a vowel or a consonant here. (If you have a Y in your name, you can enter your name on that page and it will tell you if it's a vowel or a consonant.)

How to calculate the Soul Urge number

The Soul Urge number is derived only from the vowels in your full birth name. In numerology, vowels are considered the carriers of emotional energy and inner desire, making them the ideal key to uncovering the subconscious self.

Using the Pythagorean numerology system, each vowel is assigned a numerical value. These values are added together and reduced to a single digit or a Master Number (11, 22, or 33). The resulting number is your Soul Urge.

You have a Soul Urge number based on your full name at birth, and you also have a Minor Soul Urge or Minor Heart's Desire, based on your current name (the way you introduce yourself in a social setting, including the last name). Their calculations methods are the same.

Finding Your Soul Urge Number

The value of the letters in a name

To find your Soul Urge number, write out your full name, and place the appropriate numerology value above each vowel. Reduce the sum totals of the vowels of each name to single digits (unless you encountered a Master number 11, Master number 22, or Master number 33 - in which case you don't reduce them).

Add those totals and reduce them again to a single-digit number, this will be your Soul Urge.

If at any time you encounter a Master number, 11, 22 or 33,  do not reduce it to a single-digit number.

Let's use Thomas John Hancock's chart as an example:

If you would rather bypass the math, or verify that you did it correctly, you can use our Chart Calculator.

(Always place the numbers for the Soul Urge above the name. The space below the name is used for the Personality number.)

The name Thomas has 2 vowels, O and A, with the values 6 and 1 resp., which totals to 7. The name John has 1 vowel, an O, which is 6. The name Hancock has two vowels, A and O (1 and 6), which adds to 7. Thomas's Heart's Desire is therefore 7 + 6 + 7 = 20, which reduces to 2.

What the Soul Urge Reveals About You

Numerology views your personality from different angles. Your Soul Urge (or Heart's Desire) is the inner you; it shows your underlying urge, your true motivation, and it dramatically influences the choices you make in life.

The Soul Urge is seen as part of the larger picture, which includes the Life Path, Expression, Birthday number, and Personality. But each points to a different side of you.

You also have a Minor Soul Urge number, based on your current or short name (as opposed to the Soul Urge based on your full name at birth). The calculation method is the same and in the above chart of John Hancock you can see he has a 4 Minor Soul Urge showing in the round circle to the right of his short name.

Your Soul Urge number describes:

  • Your emotional needs
  • What makes you feel fulfilled or frustrated
  • The kind of experiences you are naturally drawn to
  • What you need in relationships to feel understood
  • The inner motivations behind your decisions

Because it operates below the surface, the Soul Urge may not always be obvious to others—and sometimes not even to you. However, when ignored or suppressed, it often manifests as restlessness, dissatisfaction, or a sense that something important is missing.

The Role of the Soul Urge in Personal Growth

True personal growth occurs when your outer life aligns with your inner truth. The Soul Urge acts as a compass, pointing toward what genuinely nourishes your spirit.

  • Understanding your Soul Urge can help you:
  • Make more authentic life and career choices
  • Improve emotional balance and self-acceptance
  • Recognize why certain paths feel “right” or “wrong”
  • Create relationships that honor your emotional needs

When the Soul Urge is honored, life feels more meaningful and emotionally satisfying - even when challenges arise.

Soul Urge vs. Other Core Numerology Numbers

The Soul Urge works in harmony with other key numbers in your chart, especially the Life Path, Expression, and Personality numbers.

  • The Life Path shows your overall direction and lessons
  • The Expression reveals your talents and abilities
  • The Personality reflects how others perceive you
  • The Soul Urge explains what drives you from within

The Soul Urge adds emotional depth and nuance, helping you understand not just what you are here to do, but what your heart needs along the way.

Why the Soul Urge Is So Important

Many people follow paths that look successful on the surface but feel empty inside. This often happens when life choices align with external expectations rather than inner truth.

The Soul Urge reminds us that emotional fulfillment is not optional - it is essential. By understanding and honoring this number, you gain insight into what truly matters to you, allowing you to live with greater clarity, balance, and authenticity.

How NOT to Calculate Your Soul Urge Number

Some numerologists will calculate your Soul Urge number by adding the numerical values of all the vowels in your name, instead of each name separately. This is incorrect and will give you the wrong double-digit results (even though the single digit end-result does not change).

This may result in false Master numbers or hide true Master numbers, or Karmic Debt numbers, Power numbers, or other double-digit numbers that have specific meanings.

The Calculation Method of the Soul Urge Reveals the Beauty of Patterns in Numerology

Numerology is about patterns that are linked in intricate ways. The letters in your name are used to calculate your Transits (cycles used for forecasting). Your first name is the basis for your Physical Transit, your middle name for your Mental Transit, and your last name for your Spiritual Transit. Transit cycles are linked to your name numbers (Expression, Heart’s Desire, and Personality).

Your name numbers should therefore be calculated with that in mind. Adding all the numbers in your name in one continuous string, instead of each part of your name individually, ignores the patterns that are the basis of numerology.
