Who was Nicodemus?

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council. This gave him significant power, influence, and wealth.

As a Pharisee, he was deeply knowledgeable in Jewish law and tradition. However, his encounter with Jesus revealed that religious status alone does not guarantee salvation.

“Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.” (John 3:1)

Why Did Nicodemus Visit Jesus at Night?

John 3:2 tells us that Nicodemus came to Jesus at night. The reason is not explicitly stated, but scholars propose several possibilities:

  • He was curious and genuinely seeking truth.
  • He feared repercussions from his fellow Pharisees.
  • He wanted a private conversation without interruptions.

Regardless of the reason, this nighttime meeting led to one of the most important theological discussions in Scripture.

Nicodemus and Jesus: A Life-Changing Conversation

†Jesus immediately addressed the heart of Nicodemus’ search:

“I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” (John 3:3)

Nicodemus struggled to understand the concept of being “born again.” Jesus clarified that it referred to a spiritual rebirth—being born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5-6).

This was a radical idea for someone who had been taught that following religious laws was the key to righteousness.

Jesus also referenced Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21:8-9), foreshadowing His own crucifixion:

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” (John 3:14-15)

Then, Jesus delivered one of the most famous verses in the Bible:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Nicodemus’ Growth in Faith

Though we don’t see an immediate conversion, Nicodemus reappears later in John’s Gospel, showing signs of transformation.

Nicodemus Defends Jesus (John 7:50-51)

When the Pharisees plotted against Jesus, Nicodemus risked his reputation and high position and boldly challenged their judgment:

“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” (John 7:51)

Though he didn’t openly declare faith in Jesus, he began to defend Him.

Nicodemus Helps Bury Jesus (John 19:38-40)

After Jesus’ crucifixion, Nicodemus, along with Joseph of Arimathea, boldly stepped forward to prepare Jesus’ body for burial. He brought about 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes—a burial fit for a king.

This act signified his transformation from a secret seeker to a devoted follower, willing to risk everything for Jesus.

  • In what ways can you move from being a secret believer to a bold follower?
  • Are you holding onto worldly status instead of fully surrendering to Christ?
