The Stranger will be released on Netflix today, Thursday, January 30, where viewers can follow the story of Adam Price (played by Richard Armitage) who is told an unsettling secret by a stranger. The series is based on the novel written by author Harlan Coben who published the book in 2015. So where is the new series filmed and set?

Where is The Stranger set?

There is no exact location specified in the new series.

However, many of the characters have northern accents so it is assumed the story takes place somewhere up north in the UK.

Mancunian actress Siobhan Finnernan joked to BT TV: “Hopefully I make sense and it’s clear, or they’ll have to put subtitles up, won’t they?!”

But this setting is very different from where it originally took place in the book.

The book The Stranger by Harlan Coben was actually set somewhere America.

So especially for the Netflix series, the story has been uprooted and brought to England.

Also speaking to BT TV, Coben said: “We condensed the world.

“In the book, The Stranger is dropping bombs all over the country, here The Stranger is dropping the bombs in one community.”

Where was The Stranger filmed?

Despite not saying exactly where the show is set, one of the main filming locations was in Manchester.

The cast and crew were seen shooting The Stranger around Manchester, including locations such as St Peter’s Square Whalley Range and Ancoats.

Beside from Manchester, parts of The Stranger were also filmed in Bolton, Stockport and Eccles.

So going by both the northern accents and the filming locations, it is reasonable to assume the story is in northern England.

Actor Armitage, who is probably best known for his roles in Spooks and The Hobbit, will lead the cast as Adam, the family man who receives a surprising claim about his wife Corinne (Dervla Kirwan) from a complete stranger.

However, when he tries to find out more about whether this secret is true, he starts to find out even more than what he initially bargained for.

As well as Armitage, Happy Valley actress Siobhan Finnernan will play DS Johanna Griffin and Hannah John-Kamen will take on the role of the stranger which gives Adam the unsettling news.

Absolutely Fabulous actress and comedian Jennifer Saunders will also has a small role in the series.

The Stranger will consist of a total of eight hour-long episodes.
