Cohan left to pursue a lead role on new comedy series Whiskey Cavalier, but when the show flopped after its first series she decided to return to The Walking Dead.

Her arrival came during The Whisperers’ siege on the allied communities, where she was joined by the mysterious masked figure.

Now in a teaser clip taken from the read-through of upcoming episode Home Sweet Home, we see Maggie’s response to Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) freedom.

Maggie could never forgive Negan for murdering her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) and demanded Rick (Andrew Lincoln) put him to death for his crimes.

However, Rick refused to do so and instead insisted on incarcerating him to prove they didn’t need to resort to the brutality of The Saviours.

It turns out this decision was the driving force behind Maggie’s departure.

“Hey, Maggie,” Negan says upon coming face-to-face with her again.

Unimpressed, she snaps back: “So you’re out?”

Negan assures her: “I didn’t escape if that’s what you’re thinking?”

As tension mounts, Carol (Melissa McBride) steps in to try and defend Negan’s place in the group.

“There’s one more thing you should know – Negan was with the Whisperers that night,” she explains.

“I wanted you to hear it from me, because…” McBride continues, only to be cut off by Maggie, who asks: “It was you? You let him out?”

Assuring Maggie it was the group’s best bet to defeat Alpha, she says: “We were gonna lose everything, Negan’s the reason we didn’t.”

Maggie is unwilling to debate the matter further, but later confides in Daryl (Norman Reedus) about why she had to leave Hilltop.

“The truth is I left home because I didn’t want Negan taking up any more space in my head and I realised I wasn’t ready to bring Hershel back to that,” she confesses.

“The next morning I found Elijah and a whole community that needed us as much as we needed them. I felt like it was meant to be.”

Showing her more reasonable side, she sympathises when Daryl sticks up for Carol, but admits she likely would’ve intervened if she had been around.

“She did what she felt she had to, I get it. God only knows what I would’ve done if I was there, but I wasn’t,” she concludes.

The clip comes after Norman Reedus claimed he was injured after trying to follow “embarassing” coronavirus guidelines on set.
