The Witcher Season 3 Isn't Coming Out In July 2022

It’s the summer of heavyweight fantasy and science fiction shows! From HBO’s House of the Dragon to Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Netflix’s Stranger Things 4, streaming services are bringing out the big guns. One series that has been rather quiet, however, is The Witcher, the fantasy monster-hunting hit from Netflix. Starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Anya Charlotra as the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg, The Witcher has captivated audiences with its gritty storytelling, magical action scenes, and deeply realized fantasy world.

Season 2 released back in December and left off with a few major cliffhangers. Politicians and dark forces set their sights on Princess Ciri for a variety of nefarious reasons, ranging from using her for their own ends to murdering her to stamp out her claim to the throne of Cintra. We got our first hint at the spectral riders of the Wild Hunt, who will become main villains as the series progresses. And Yennefer, Geralt, and Ciri were all back together for the first time in quite a while; will it last?

The anticipation for season 3 is real. But when is it coming out? Let’s discuss the latest.

When does The Witcher season 3 come out?

As much as we might wish it otherwise, The Witcher season 3 will not be coming to Netflix in July 2022. This is because the show is currently in the middle of production, filming in Europe and putting together its bolder and more ambitious third season. Season 3 is based on the novel The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski, broadly considered one of the strongest books in The Witcher series. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has teased that it will be “huge” compared to previous seasons, and given the large action scenes that happen in that book, it’s easy to believe her.

Speaking of, the latest bit of news that we got from the set of The Witcher season 3 is that last month Henry Cavill filmed two straight weeks of fight scenes for the show. It’s believed that these may be taking place in the elven ruin of Shaerrawedd, which would imply that season 3 will be drawing some of the material from Blood of Elves that didn’t make it into season 2.

Given that The Witcher is still filming and that it is a special effects-heavy show that requires a lot of post-production, it’s unlikely we’ll see it before 2023.

In the mean time, the Witcher prequel limited series Blood Origin, which stars Michelle Yeoh, is slated to hit Netflix sometime later this year.
