Von first gained national attention in the early 2000s as a cast member on MTV reality shows, including "Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour" and multiple seasons of "The Challenge."
He later transitioned from reality television into stand-up comedy, gradually establishing himself as a respected touring comic with a unique voice shaped by his Louisiana upbringing and eccentric observations about everyday life. Von's career expanded significantly in the 2010s with the rise of podcasting. His show "This Past Weekend" became one of the most popular comedy podcasts, featuring long-form conversations with comedians, musicians, and public figures. Known for blending humor with unexpectedly reflective discussions about addiction, mental health, and personal growth, Von has carved out a distinctive place in modern comedy. In addition to his podcast work, he has released several stand-up specials and remains a highly active touring comedian, performing across the United States and internationally.
Early Life
Theo Von was born Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski III on March 19, 1980, in Covington, Louisiana. He grew up in a working-class family with Polish, Nicaraguan, and Irish roots. His father, Roland Theodor Achilles von Kurnatowski, was significantly older than his mother and passed away when Theo was a teenager.
Von's upbringing in southern Louisiana had a lasting influence on both his personality and comedic style. His stories often draw from the eccentric characters, cultural quirks, and small-town experiences he encountered growing up in the region.
He attended several colleges over the years, including Louisiana State University, Loyola University New Orleans, and the University of Arizona. Eventually, he graduated from the University of New Orleans with a degree in urban planning.
Reality Television Beginnings
Theo Von first became known to a national audience in 2000 when he appeared on MTV's reality series "Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour." The show followed a group of young adults traveling across the United States while completing challenges and competing in various tasks.
Von's quick wit and unusual sense of humor quickly made him a memorable personality. His popularity on "Road Rules" led to appearances on multiple seasons of MTV's competition series "The Challenge," where he continued to build a fan base among reality television viewers.
While the reality TV exposure brought him early recognition, Von eventually grew interested in pursuing stand-up comedy as a long-term career.

Transition to Stand-Up Comedy
After moving to Los Angeles, Von began performing regularly at comedy clubs and developing his own comedic voice. His style leaned heavily on storytelling, often weaving together strange childhood memories, exaggerated anecdotes, and surreal observations about everyday life.
In 2006, Von gained further exposure when he appeared on NBC's comedy competition show "Last Comic Standing." Although he did not win the competition, the show helped introduce him to a broader audience and gave him valuable experience performing in front of large crowds.
Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, Von continued building his stand-up career through club appearances, comedy festivals, and television spots. His unique storytelling approach gradually distinguished him from other comedians on the circuit.
Podcasting and "This Past Weekend"
A major turning point in Von's career came with the rise of podcasting. In 2016, he launched the podcast "This Past Weekend," which quickly developed a devoted audience.
The podcast features a mix of solo episodes and interviews with guests from across the entertainment world, including comedians, musicians, athletes, and internet personalities. Von's conversational style, unusual digressions, and willingness to discuss personal struggles helped the show stand out in a crowded podcast landscape.
In addition to his own show, Von has frequently collaborated with other prominent podcasters and comedians. He co-hosted the podcast "King and the Sting" with comedian Brendan Schaub, further expanding his reach among comedy podcast audiences.
Stand-Up Specials and Touring
As his popularity grew online, Von's stand-up career expanded significantly. He began performing larger theater shows and releasing recorded specials that showcased his signature storytelling style.
In 2016, he released the comedy special "No Offense," which was distributed through Netflix's comedy platform. The special introduced many viewers to his distinctive brand of humor built around unusual childhood memories and oddball characters from his past.
He followed that with the 2021 Netflix special "Regular People," which further solidified his reputation as a successful touring comedian. The special explored topics such as relationships, addiction recovery, and life on the road, blending humor with moments of introspection.
Von continues to tour extensively, performing hundreds of shows across North America and internationally.

Personal Life
Theo Von was once romantically linked to reality star Brandi Glanville, but has since kept his personal life private.
Theo has said that he decided to get sober when he showed up to a radio interview after a night of using cocaine and "couldn't even talk." He said of that day, "The main gift that God had given me was my voice. And I couldn't even use it because I've been up all night just using drugs to feel good somehow, or using drugs to feel anything."
Former MLB player Darryl Strawberry was a fellow guest on the show and was 13 years sober at the time. Von realized that something needed to change in his life and began going to AA meetings. He stated:
"I sat down and listened to people tell stories, which were my favorite thing to hear. My whole life I've been loving stories, man. I love your story. You know, whatever your story is I love it man because all my life when I was young I just wanted a different story."
Real Estate
In March 2021, Von paid $1.645 million for a 4,918-square-foot home in Nashville, Tennessee. He purchased the home from former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason, who paid $1.095 million for it in 2014. He also has an apartment in Los Angeles, California.
