Hot Topics Subscriber I don't know who "they" are, either. I don't even have a guess, really. But we got a "nuisance dog warning" in the mail because someone called to report excessive barking from 6AM to 11:30PM. The complaint is against the "miniature pinscher at 1234 Main Street". Well, first of all, Marco is NOT a min pin. I believe there *is* a min pin down the block in a condo unit, but I'm not sure, and I have no idea if the thing barks. Second, the houses on either side of ours also have dogs - who also bark on occasion when they are in their backyards. One is a lab (also NOT a min-pin) and the other is a Cairn Terrier/Toto Dog - NOT a min pin). And I have to say that now, Marco barks the LEAST of the 3 dogs! :) Third, I asked my neighbors on either side if a) they called for any reason (I'd be very surprised, they both love Marco and like I said, have barky dogs of their own). They didn't call. Then I asked if they heard Marco barking excessively, ever. They said no, not since before Christmas back when he was a little guy! [Which, by the way, I'm very happy *we* made it out of the bark-like-crazy-all-the-time phase!!! :D Now if only Neighbor Dog would stop... but Neighbor Dog is happy, so we don't really care.] Now, Marco DOES still bark, but it's only the first minute he's outside, to scare away the squirrels/birds/cats. Then he just runs around with his ball or lies in the sun. I'm really surprised that we didn't get a call about this back before January... but now? And finally, Marco is an indoor dog. If he's outside, we're outside... or not far from him at all, and if he starts barking we shush him. So, I really didn't understand this complaint. SO..... I called animal control about it to see if they would tell me who filed it (they didn't, which is fine, I understand wanting to remain anonymous). Then I told them we didn't have a min-pin, we had a dobe - big difference. I also told them all of the above, about the neighbor dogs, the min-pin down the block, and Marco being an indoor dog, and that I asked the neighbors I know if he barked excessively and they all said no. I do not know my diagonal-behind-the-house neighbors very well, they are probably the ones who called - otherwise the complainer DEFINITELY has the wrong house. I know I have met those back corner neighbors, but we rarely interact at all. I'm actually really disappointed that someone would just call AC rather than come talk to us... but on the other hand, I understand being afraid of strangers... especially strangers with a big dog! In any case... the rule here, as stated in my warning, is that you get warned once. When you get another call for the same thing by a different household, you get a citation. If you get 2 citations, you are responsible for proving that you have removed the dog from the neighborhood, or AC will come and do it for you. :( So I know we are very far from THAT... but sheesh, I don't want to have even one foot going down that road at all! AC made a note on the complaint that we have a doberman, so it could be the wrong dog, and they are going to investigate or follow up with the complainer (I think). But I want to go knock on doors and introduce myself again... and tell them to please feel free to call ME directly if there is an issue! Does that sound like a reasonable thing for me to do, or should I leave it alone? Just curious whether people think it's a good/bad idea to go over and say hello and ask them about it? JanS

Administrative Staff Moderator Hot Topics Subscriber Wow what a lousy thing to do when they didn't even know which dog it was. I suppose it goes back to the old stereotype that Marco is the biggest, scariest looking dog so they decided to blame him before really seeing who the culprit was. That sort of thing annoys me to no end... I agree that they should have gone to who they thought it was and talked to them in person, but it sounds like they're too chicken shit to show their face and say it in person, so they just wanted to make it hard for someone - anyone with a dog. I doubt anyone would fess up, but it wouldn't hurt to go around to wake some people up to show them that you're a responsible dog owner who is concerned about being blamed for something you didn't do. I'm not sure if I'd say to talk to "you" first", but to say that they should make sure they have the right dog before taking action so you're not claiming any guilt. Marinegeekswife

Hot Topics Subscriber While I, like Jan, doubt anyone will admit to doing it I would suggest that you go around to the neighbors and express your concern. Don't make it like a "going to hunt down the culprit" mission but approach it like "I am so sorry if my dog is being a bother, please help me help you." Give them a notecard with your name and personal phone numbers on there and ask them to please at least call you first before calling AC to give you a chance to remedy the problem. Maybe even offer to let them meet Marco. Then be open to any phone calls you get. DocReverto

People tend to be backstabbers. Do you live in a HOA? Is this why they have the power to remove your dog over barking. It sounds like someone may be trying to force your doberkid out of the neighborhood, which I am sure is not that uncommon for bully breeds in HOA neighborhoods. I wouldn't even consider this as strike one. If the complaint is for a mini pin and you don't own one, then they have no case. Until they can get the breed correct they might as well be calling credit card customer service. It won't go anywhere. Katja Henriksen

Wow that is scary. I wonder why Animal Control wouldn't investigate. Otherwise anyone can just file complaints and get others into trouble even if it is not true. Please keep us updated on how your neighbours react to you talking to them and what Animal control comes back with (if they do). Lizzard

I was thinking the same thing. :) I hope that is true! And we do not have an HOA, it's an old urban neighborhood.

I know, right?!?! I"m guessing either they get a million calls like this a day, and only a handful of owners ever come back and refute it... ? I'm glad I called! I'll let you know what the unknown neighbor(s) say. Jess, I was planning on using your suggested approach, if I did this. I'll let you all know what happens... :) ariegel

Are neighbors leave there dogs out until late and they bark at EVERTHING! We get up a 4:30 am during the week so I don't like being woke up a 1am because they are barking, but I went and talked to them about it and it has got better, not perfect, but better. Dobs4ever

Has nothing to do with HOAs,animal control has that power. The laws work the same here as she described, but know they do indeed investigate the issue here. Some people are just assholes.I wonder if it was a mistake, based on the min pin angle.I wouldn't give it too much thought unless you get another. At that point,my #arguement would be pointing back to the first complaint. No one would mistake the bark of a min pin with a Dobe as the first report was filed. So,if now a 2nd is filed pointing to you it tells me they are just targeting you Twisted_Angel

Hot Topics Subscriber I don't understand people at all. They should always try to talk to the owners first. Ugh. I had an issue like this a couple of years ago. Ace had just turned two. Some guy was in my yard, and when I walked out and asked him if I could help him, he went off saying my dogs bark all the time, which isn't true. Then the threatened to "handle it himself" if I didn't shut the dogs up. My dogs had been in the house all that morning. I called animal control, and the police because I was afraid he was going to poison my dogs. AC told me that even if the dogs are in the house, they can still be annoying. But, I'm sure I'd know if they were barking considering they are in the living room with me. Cops said nothing could be done until he made an attempt to harm the dogs. It's really not fair the way dogs are treated. There are not enough laws to protect them from stuff like this. I hope it was just a simple mistake on the other persons part, and you don't have any more problems. Acε'ѕ Mσмму ツ Sαмѕυиg Sтяαтσѕρнєяє zmchristopher

Moderator Hot Topics Subscriber Wow, they don't give much leeway, do they? Three strikes you're out............and they don't even know if it's you! Yea, a Min Pin sounds like a Doberman! :groan:Makes me angry but I would be scared at the same time since it seems they have some power. And here's the thing too..........if a barking dog was annoying me (it would take a lot!) and I called AC (I never would lol) I would never want AC to take the dog away from someone! Yes, he may be annoying but sheesh, that's not the answer I'd be looking for. I would never want a pet torn from its owner unless it was total neglect. I'd be talking to the neighbors. Panama

Hot Topics Subscriber I didn't read all of the responses, but........ Obviously the "complainer" isn't a dog person, otherwise they'd know the difference between a small dog's yappy bark and a larger dog's bark!!! Even a Doberman pup doesn't "yap"! I'm so glad I don't have any immediate neighbors! Lizzard

Hot Topics Subscriber Thanks, all! Well we went to the neighbors behind us - the one directly behind us (who we know a little bit) was home, and he said it was definitely not him that made the call, he didn't have any problem with Marco and he'd just walk over if there ever was any problem. I knew I liked them. :) So it's one of the corners, and neither of them were home - or, they didn't answer the door - when we went over. I had notes with our name and numbers on them, I am going to include them in a hand-written note and just leave them in the mailboxes of the houses. Hopefully this is the end of it. Gel, you are right on, if after all of this, we get a new complaint then yes, they are targeting us. Which would suck. But hopefully it really is mistaken identity. Coulda done without this headache this week. But whatever. It did make me realize how far Marco has come, behavior wise! He is such a great doggy! :D :paw: Dobs4ever

Hot Topics Subscriber I would ask the neighbors if they would be willing to sign a note stating that your dogs do not bark excessively and that they have no reason to complain??? Then I would give it to animal control. Written testimony is powerful in fighting this stuff. zmchristopher

Leaving something in their mailbox is against the law and you "could" be fined for it. Just FYI. sammy

Your mailbox is for the US Mail only. Not personal message delivery. If they report her/him at the very least they could be required to pay postage for it. If you don't believe me call your postmaster and ask them if you can leave messages in peoples mail boxes. For example when I lived in a neighborhood the homeowners association left messages in everyone's mailbox. One neighbor called the cops who contacted the PO and they had to remove the flyers from the mail box and pay postage for the ones that had already been picked by the owners. I guarantee you with the state the PO is in they will not look kindly on you using their system for free.
