MOST of us consider sex to be a pretty good workout, with past studies suggesting you can burn up to 200 calories in one steamy session.

But before you all start skipping the gym in favour of a fumble under the sheets – it appears we may have been lied to.

The average session only lasts six minutes – and there’s only so many calories you can burn in that time.

According to a study about obesity in the New England Journal of Medicine, a bloke in his early to mid 30s would only lose 21 calories.

Which is the equivalent of a few slices of cucumber or one medium tomato – so not very much at all.

The number is based on the average person’s metabolic rate during sex.

However, the good news is an orgasm can ramp up the weight loss process.

The sexual climax leads to a rush of hormones, a spike in blood flow, the generation and ejaculation of sexual fluids.

All this requires energy, meaning one orgasm could burn off between 60 and 100 calories.

That’s three to five times the amount of calories burnt off by the sex itself.
