We've all done it: pressed send on a text message only to suddenly realise that we've sent it to the wrong person or woken up the morning after a night out and felt that familiar fear grip us as we check our sent texts.

'Why, oh why, can't you unsend text messages?' we've cried to the technology heavens.

Well, it seems our prayers have been answered as there is actually a way to delete sent texts before the recipient has opened them, Grazia reports, and it's all thanks to a new app.

Privates, which is currently available on Apple iOS (though Windows and Android versions are expected to be up next), allows users to effectively delete messages before the recipient opens the message using the immediate recall function.

Privates also allows users to customise' self-destruct settings' by selecting from three levels of security – Mild, Wild and Insane – which deletes the message (so long as it's unread) after three, 12, 24 hours accordingly.

Well that's one night-out-niggle solved, we wonder if there's an app for deleting that time we insisted on singing at the office party...
