What are hiccups?
Technically, the diaphragm, located between your lungs and stomach, pulls down when you inhale air into your lungs and then relaxes when you exhale. But, sometimes, there are ‘things’ that irritate the diaphragm and it can spasm, pushing you to suck air suddenly into your throat, and it hits your voice box. This sudden internal chaos makes the vocal cords close, and creates the distinct “hic!” sound called hiccups. Filled stomach
According to health experts, whenever you eat more than what your stomach can handle, it triggers hiccups. Excess food causes distension and the reasons could be excess food, eating food very quickly, eating without proper chewing or even drinking a lot of alcohol.3/7
Emotional changes
For some people, apart from food, things that can cause hiccups include emotional changes like excitement, stress, anger or even because of inhaling cold air.4/7
Change in oesophagus temperature
The change of temperature of your oesophagus can also cause hiccups. When you eat or drink anything very hot or cold, it stimulates the main nerves of the oesophagus and causes irritation that results in hiccups.5/7
Dry foods
Eating dry foods like bread or green leaves and spicy foods like chillies often irritate the back of your throat when swallowed and distend the stomach that results in hiccups.6/7
Alcohol
You will be surprised to know that even drinking a lot of alcohol, can cause hiccups. Beer is a carbonated drink that leads to stomach distension and causes irritation of your oesophagus resulting in hiccups.7/7
What’s the solution?
According to experts, nothing till date has been proven to stop hiccups. However, there are tricks that people often try to control hiccups that includes: 1. Hold breath for 15-20 seconds. 2.
