Thread A Punch Needle Without A Threader - DoodleDog Primitives

It’s very frustrating when your last threader breaks right in the middle of a punch needle project – especially if you are almost finished! If you have the right supplies, you could make a punch needle threader. But if you don’t have the supplies for that, is there a way to thread a punch needle without a threader? YES, you can thread the punch needle without a threader!

Supplies to Thread Punch Needle:

• Punch Needle
• Pearl Cotton #8
• Sharp Sewing Needle
• Punching Floss

Thread the Punch Needle Needle:

Unwind some of the pearl cotton #8 and poke the end of it through the tube in the needle.

Push it, a little at a time, through the needle until it comes out the other end of the punch needle.

Be careful not to poke yourself with the needle tip!

Once the thread is poking out the other end of the needle, pull the thread out 4 to 5 inches.

Thread the sharp sewing needle with the floss that you are going to use for punching.

I am using three strands of embroidery floss.

The sewing needle MUST be sharp – a dull needle won’t work.

Hold the pearl cotton tight between two fingers of one hand.

Poke the threaded needle through the MIDDLE of the pearl cotton a few inches from the end of the pearl cotton.

This is a bit tricky and can take a steady hand and several tries.

Pull needle and floss through the middle of the pearl cotton.

Pull the punching string through until both strings are about equal in length after the join.

Back at the needle end of the punch needle, pull the pearl cotton back through the tube.

This should bring the punching floss along with it.

You can easily pull off the pearl cotton floss

and then thread the eye of the needle.

Then you are ready to finish punching that project!

Troubleshooting:

The first time I did this, the embroidery floss wouldn’t come all the way through my tube.

After close inspection, I found out that the inner tube of my punch needle was clogged with fuzz.

I cleaned out the tube with a can of air

and then I was able to thread the punch needle without a needle threader.
