What are ticks?

Ticks are closely related to insects and spiders, and there are over 20 known tick species in the Midwest. Most often, they live out their lives feeding on wildlife, however, people may be bitten when they work or recreate in areas where ticks live. Ticks are most often associated with natural areas such as grassy shorelines, wooded areas, or fields near wooded areas. Ticks are rarely encountered indoors unless brought inside on the clothing of people or on the body of a pet.

The five most common ticks found in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana are the American dog tick (wood tick), Blacklegged tick (deer tick), Lone Star tick, Woodchuck tick and the Brown dog tick (kennel tick). Where do you find ticks?

Generally, ticks are found outdoors in tall, grassy areas with lots of foliage. If you find one inside, chances are it was carried in by someone in your house or on one of your pets. Always inspect yourself and your pets after activity in the woods or in deep grassy fields.

This could cause the body to separate from the head, leaving the head embedded in the skin. Wipe the area with an antiseptic wipe and monitor for signs of inflammation or rash.
