Sunrise and sunset times in Azerbaijan are determined by the moderate location in the northern hemisphere. Not as extreme as in the Nordic countries, but still noticeable. The days are longer in summer (June to September) than in winter (December to March). With up to about 15:10 hours, there are the longest days in June. The longest dark nights, on the other hand, are in winter. A December night in Baku lasts almost 15 hours and the days start about 3 hours later

Who wants to look at the sunrise during these days, can take it easy. Late by 8:01 the sun rises in Baku. The early sunset at 17:32 makes the day currently a bit too short.Back to overview: Azerbaijan

Duration of the sunset

The distance from the equator and the path of the sun determines not only the time of sunrise and sunset. The farther a country is from the equator, the more oblique the sun's path is to the horizon, causing sunset to last for a different duration. Baku lies on the 40th degree of northern latitude and is therefore very far away from the equator. While a sunset near the equator lasts only about 20 minutes, in Azerbaijan, this period averages 34 minutes. In June, it's about 37 minutes in Baku, while in December it's 32 minutes.

The sun always shines from the south

Height of the sun in BakuThe capital Baku is located at 40 degrees north latitude and therefore also north of the Tropic. While the sun swings back and forth between the northern and southern tropics throughout the year, it shines on Baku from the south, but is never perpendicular to it. In December, the sun is so far away that even at midday it can only be seen 26 degrees above the horizon. (0 degrees is at the height of the horizon, 90 degrees would be a position directly above Baku.) It reaches its highest point at noon on June 21st. Then the sun shines down at an angle of 73.1 degrees.

Actual hours of sunshine

Hours of sunshine per day in BakuThe period from sunrise to sunset is the astronomical length of the day. It is therefore independent of whether you can actually see the sun. In addition, significant deviations can be perceived depending on cloud cover or other visual obstructions. For the Baku region, we have shown the approximate sunshine duration in the graph here.

In June, the sun shines for around 10:18 hours a day. In contrast, the day is 15:06 hours long. This means that the visual obstruction is around 4:48 hours per day. In December, on the other hand, it is 6:52 of 9:22 hours.
