Many people have started to go outdoors as the weather warms up in mid-Missouri, and with April being the start of tick season conservationists are reminding people to be on the lookout.

There are four tick species in Missouri that bite humans, and about 12 known diseases they can transmit.

Matt Combes, the Ecological Health Unit Supervisor for the Department, saidthe best way to avoid ticks is to stay out of their habitat.

If there are trails stay on the trails, if you're walking through grass and shrubs and stuff like that's chest high down to your ankle-high then you have a higher chance of contracting ticks.

He said wearing long sleeves and long pants can help deter ticks from getting to the skin, and wearing white or light-colored clothing is helpful in spotting ticks on clothes.

He also recommended doing frequent checks while you are outside and a more thorough check when you get inside.

Combes said the benefits of getting outside far outweigh the risk of getting a tick bite.

A lot of people have become uncertain about that kind of health improvement and the risk of health to be catching a disease. I guess I would just encourage people to not let the fear of tick bites prevent them from going out and enjoying nature. Just do what you can to take the prevention measures.

The department is asking people to mail in ticks they find to help with their research efforts.

People are asked to place each live tick in a plastic zip-top bag with a piece of damp paper towel or moist cotton ball, then fold the bag and place it inside another plastic zip-top bag with a completed sample submission form.

People are then asked to place the bag and completed form in an envelope and mail it to A.T. Still University in Kirksville.
