As DC fans know, Dick Grayson isn’t mean to be Robin forever. As the cool blue Nightwing, Dick fights crime in his own way when he’s not stuck being Batman’s ward. So will fans of Titans get to see Dick graduate to a league of his own and ditch the Robin costume to become Nightwing?

At New York Comic Con, Titans star Benton Thwaites says he can’t definitively confirm if his Dick Grayson will become Nightwing, but he does explain that Dick is on a path of change throughout the series.

“The show is about Robin going out on his own and becoming someone else,” Thwaites tells reporters at the Titans press room.

“He’s basically trying to break away from fighting like an adult, that ferocious way that Batman taught him which he doesn’t agree with. Kind of like breaking an addiction; when he’s fighting he loves it. We see that struggle and we see him leave that behind and create a new identity, a new path, which the Titans kind of help him do once they all connect together.”

But will Dick’s transformation be illustrated with his evolution into Nightwing? Costume and eskrima stick? “In terms of becoming something else, I can’t say,” Thwaites says. “You may see it.”

In the comics, after spending years as Batman’s sidekick, Dick Grayson leaves the Robin mantle to become Nightwing, borrowing the name of a Kryptonian bird and the name of a hero he met on Krypton. Dick Grayson officially became Nightwing in Tales of the Teen Titans #44 in 1984. Jason Todd succeeded him as the second Robin, but that tenure ended in a tragedy that would eventually turn Jason into the more violent anti-hero Red Hood.

Titans will premiere on October 12 on DC Universe.
