To Find the Percent of a Given Number

What is 18% of 500?

18% of 500 represent 18 parts out of hundred, so 18% of 500 represents 18 parts for each hundred which is 18 + 18 + 18 + 18 + 18 = 90. Thus, 18% of 500 = 90

So, 18% of 500 = \(\frac{18}{100}\) × 500 = 18 × 5 = 90

To find the percent of a given number let us consider some of the following examples.

1. Find 50% of 75.Solution:   50% of 75

= 50 × 1/100 × 75= 50/100 × 75= (50 × 75)/100= 3750/100

= 3750/100 ÷ 50/50 [Divide the numerator and denominator by 50] = 75/2

= 37 ½Answer: 37 ½

2. What is 15% of 200?

Solution:

15% of 200

= \(\frac{15}{100}\) × 200

= 15 × 2

= 30

3. Find 12% of 250.Solution:12% of 250= 12 × 1/100 × 250= 12/100 × 250= (12 × 250)/100= 3000/100= 3000/100 ÷ 100/100[Divide the numerator and denominator by 100]= 30Answer: 304. Find 30% of 86.Solution:30% of 86= 30 × 1/100 × 86= 30/100 × 86= (30 × 86)/100= 2580/100= 2580/100 ÷ 20/20[Divide the numerator and denominator by 20]= 129/5

= 25 4/5Answer: 25 4/5

7. What is 25% of 40?

Solution:

25% of 40

= \(\frac{25}{100}\) × 40

= \(\frac{100}{10}\) 

= 10

Solution:

1 kg = 1000 g

Solution:

25% of 400 = \(\frac{25}{100}\) × 400

                  = \(\frac{25 × 400}{100}\) 

                  = 25 × 4

                  = 100

17. Find the percent of 16\(\frac{2}{3}\)% of 200?

Solution:

16\(\frac{2}{3}\)% of 200

= \(\frac{(16 × 3 + 2)}{3}\)% × 200

= \(\frac{50}{3}\)% × 200

= \(\frac{50}{3}\) × \(\frac{50}{3}\) × 200

= \(\frac{100}{3}\) 

= 33\(\frac{1}{3}\) 

18. Find the percent of 15\(\frac{4}{5}\)% of 450?

Solution:

15\(\frac{4}{5}\)% of 450

= \(\frac{15 × 5 + 4}{5}\)% × 450

= \(\frac{79}{5}\)% × 450

= \(\frac{79}{5}\) × \(\frac{1}{100}\) × 450

= \(\frac{79 × 450}{5 × 100}\) 

= \(\frac{711}{10}\) 

= 71\(\frac{1}{10}\)
