"Perspective is all we have in life. So, if I could go back in time and tell my 12-year-old self I would accomplish: a World Series ring, a 4x Roberto Clemente Nominee, and to be the shortest designated hitter in postseason history, I would simply say, 'Where do I sign up?'" - Kemp, Tony. Tony Kemp, who spent nine seasons as a spark plug in places like Houston and Oakland, retires. The Associated Press. 15 May 2025.

Anthony Allen "Tony" Kemp enjoyed a nine-year Major League Baseball career, showcasing his versatility and leadership across four franchises: the Houston Astros (20162019), Chicago Cubs (2019), Oakland Athletics (20202023), and Baltimore Orioles (2024). Kemp made his MLB debut on May 17, 2016, marking a historic milestone as the first former Centennial High School graduate to reach the majors. During his time at Centennial, he was a standout performer, finishing his senior year with a staggering .544 batting average. His exceptional play earned him a place on The Tennessean's All-Decade high school baseball team, solidifying his reputation as one of the top prep players in Tennessee.

Kemp continued his baseball career at Vanderbilt University, where he quickly emerged as a standout player. In 2011, his freshman season, he was named SEC Freshman of the Year and played a key role in Vanderbilts first-ever College World Series appearance. By 2013, he had developed into one of the most dynamic players in the country, earning SEC Player of the Year honors and becoming just the fourth Vanderbilt player to record 100 hits in a single season. His impressive collegiate career led to his selection by the Houston Astros in the fifth round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Kemp worked his way through the Astros minor league system, showcasing his speed, defensive versatility, and ability to get on base. A dynamic and high-energy player, he carved out a nine-year career in Major League Baseball, primarily excelling at second base and the outfield. Kemps game was defined by hustle, leadership, and community involvement, making him a respected presence in every clubhouse he joined.

After limited playing time in his first two seasons, he broke out as a reliable utility player by 2018, appearing in 97 games and posting a .263 batting average with an impressive .351 OBP. Though his role on the 2017 World Series-winning Astros was limited, he remained a valuable member of the roster, contributing to the teams championship history.

In 2019, Kemp continued providing speed and contact hitting, but with playing time dwindling in Houston, he was traded midseason to the Chicago Cubs. That year, he hit a career-high eight home runs between both teams. Seeking stability, he joined the Oakland Athletics in 2020, where he found a consistent role.

His best season came in 2021, when he played 131 games, batting .279 with a stellar .382 OBP. The following year, he played a career-high 147 games, further proving his durability. Although his offensive production declined in 2023, he remained a valuable clubhouse leader.

Beyond his contributions on the field, Kemp was a four-time finalist for the Roberto Clemente Award, recognized for his dedication to community service. His Hugs for Homers celebration during his time with the Astros made him a beloved presence among fans.

From his college days at Vanderbilt to his respected tenure in the major leagues, Kemps career was characterized by grit, adaptability, and a relentless commitment to the game.

On May 15, 2025, Kemp announced his retirement from professional baseball after nine MLB seasons. In his heartfelt farewell, he reflected on his journey and encouraged undersized players to keep chasing their dreams: "To the undersized ballplayer: I see you, I hear you, and I understand you. With all of the metrics and data in the game of baseball today, there is still one measurement they cant compute: your heart."
