Top 10 Ways To Fix Netflix App Overriding Brightness on Android

Quick Tips
  • Firstly adjust the brightness from the Netflix app. While playing a video, tap the screen and adjust the brightness slider as needed.
  • Next up, disable display settings for eye comfort (blue or night light) or video enhancers. They might be interfering with Netflix’s display quality.
  • Lastly, enable developer mode and disable hardware overlays temporarily to see if the problem is resolved.

Basic Fixes

  • Use PiP Mode – Some Netflix users have suggested that switching to the picture-in-picture mode of Netflix fixed the overriding brightness issue. So watch the video in PiP mode for a few minutes and then switch to normal mode and see if the issue is resolved.
  • Disable power mode – Many Android devices offer a high-performance mode (increased brightness) and low-power mode (decreased brightness). Ensure that none of the settings is enabled, allowing Netflix to shine in its glory.
  • Check third-party apps – Are you using third-party apps or game modes that control the brightness or monitor the temperature of your phone? Disable or uninstall them to see if they are responsible for the Netflix brightness problem.
  • Update or reinstall the Netflix app – A bug could be responsible for the brightness issue on Netflix. Try updating or reinstalling the app to get rid of any underlying cause.

Fix 1. Adjust Brightness in The Netflix App

Many Netflix users don’t know that the Netflix app comes with a native setting to change the brightness. You might have changed it, and that’s why your Netflix colors are either dark or light.

You will not find the brightness control inside the settings in the Netflix app. Instead, it is present on the now-playing screen itself. To use that, play a video on Netflix. Then, tap the screen once to show the controls such as play, pause, subtitles, etc. You will see a slider on the left side. Slide it up or down to increase or decrease the brightness.

Fix 2. Enable or Disable Night Light

You should check the display settings of your phone. Most devices now come with settings like blue light protection (eye comfort shield), screen modes, etc., to make things easy on your eyes.

However, they give your device an orange-yellowish tint which will affect your Netflix experience. To disable it, go to SettingsDisplay → tap Night or Blue light. Disable the setting and cancel the schedule. Open Netflix and see if the video plays with accurate colors.

Pro Tip: You can enable/disable Night Light or Blue light from quick settings too in Android.

Fix 3. Disable Video Enhancer

On some phones such as Samsung, you will find a video enhancer setting. You should disable it to see if the issue with Netflix’s brightness is fixed or not.

To do so, go to SettingsAdvanced settings → disable Video enhancer. You can also use the search in settings to find and disable it.

Fix 4. Install Netflix Using APK

If neither updating nor uninstalling the app fixed the brightness problem on Netflix, then you should install a different version using APK. You can either upgrade or downgrade the app to see what version works for you.

Fix 5. Disable HDR in the Netflix App

Since the issue mostly happens with HDR content (movies and TV Shows), turning off the HDR. Remember the steps are only applicable on HDR-capable devices and if you have a Netflix plan that supports HDR.

To do so, go to the Netflix app and choose a profile. From the home screen, go left to open the menu. Scroll down and select Get Help Video. Here, toggle off HDR and resume watching Netflix.

Fix 6. Disable Hardware overlays

While a little technical and it might affect your device’s overall performance, the setting has worked for many users in resolving Netflix’s overriding brightness issue.

The setting basically helps apps that display content on screen to use less processing power. Without it, your apps may eat too much cache memory and battery. So proceed with caution and ensure you disable the setting temporarily.

Step 1: Go to SettingsSystemAbout phone.

Step 2: Select Software information. Next, tap the Build number multiple times until the developer mode is enabled.

Tap Settings → About phone
Go to Software information
Tap the build number to enable Developer mode

Step 3: Now, go back to Settings page → Developer options.

Step 4: Find the HW overlays setting and disable it.

Go to Settings → Developer options
Disable Hardware Overlays

Notably, if the issue is still not resolved, there’s only one way left. Contact Netflix customer support and enlist their help.
