Top Load Washer - Detergent Usage

Using laundry detergent properly in a top load washer is essential for getting good wash results with every load of laundry. The information below can help guide you in the correct use of various forms of detergent in your washer.

Top Load Washer Detergent Usage

One of the best resources for proper detergent use is the manufacturer of the detergent you're using. They test their detergents in various types of washers with varying loads and stains. Their usage recommendations on the detergent container should be followed. Below are some general tips in case no guidance provided.

Detergent Amount

  • Large loads generally need more detergent than small loads.
  • If your clothes are heavily soiled, increase the amount of detergent for that load.
  • If you have hard water, you will need more detergent. If you have soft water, you may need as little as 1/4 cup of detergent or you may have too many soapsuds which could overflow the top of the wash basket.

Detergent Type

High Efficiency (HE) Detergent

HE (High Efficiency) detergent should be used in high efficiency washers, especially those with an infuser plate rather than an agitator. HE detergent can be used in any washer, and is what we recommend.

You can use non-HE detergent, but it’s not formulated fornot HE washers,. If you’re using a non-HE detergent or any other type of detergent, including all-natural products, make sure that it is made of non-flammable ingredients. For more information, visit: Washer - HE Detergent.

When to Add Detergent to Basket

Pour detergent into your washer according to the instructions on the detergent package and information from your washer’s Owner's Manual. Some granular detergents may be difficult to dissolve because of variations in content. If desired, you can dissolve the granular or powder detergent in hot water before pouring it into the wash basket.

Proper Use of Liquid Detergent

Add the manufacturer’s recommended amount of liquid detergent to the top of the load once all of the clothes are loaded into the wash basket. You can also use part of the measured amount to treat stains before washing. Always check the manufacturer's recommended amount and directions for use of their detergent.

Proper Use of Detergent Pods or Packets

If using detergent pods or packets, add these to the bottom of the wash basket before adding clothes.
