Before Wealth & Fame

When Tracy Morgan was just six years old, his father left the household, and his mother raised him single-handedly. However, he did re-establish a connection with his father when he dropped out of high school four credits short of graduation to care for his dying father, who passed away in November 1987.

After dropping out of school, Morgan did what he could to make money for his family. Tracy Morgan made his acting debut on the TV sitcom Martin with Martin Lawrence as Hustle Man, a character who sells items from the “hood.”

Morgan was a regular cast member on Uptown Comedy Club, a sketch-comedy show filmed in Harlem from 1992 to 1994. He then joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1996, and he was chosen over Stephan Colbert by Lorne Michaels. Morgan was a regular on SNL until 2003, but he returned to host in 2009 and 2015, and also appeared as a guest when Jimmy Fallon was hosting.

In 2003, Tracy Morgan landed his own sitcom, The Tracy Morgan Show, though it was canceled after only one season. The same year, he appeared in the Chris Rock film Head of State, as a man watching TV and wondering why Martin isn’t on.

Walmart Lawsuit

Walmart accepted responsibility for the incident in 2015 and settled with Morgan and other victims. While the exact settlement amount was never disclosed, some reports speculated it might have been as high as $90 million.

However, Morgan’s settlement encountered challenges in 2015 when Walmart’s insurers, Ohio Casualty and Liberty Insurance Underwriters, contested the payout, claiming that Walmart had overcompensated the victims.
