Afternoon All: I have a Plex system (Plex Media Server for serving the media, and Plex for Windows for viewing the media) operating on my Windows 10 PC. All the media is stored on two different Synology systems (a 218+ and 220+). I want to install Plex on my other Synology, a 1520+. How do I: 1. Transfer/migrate my Windows 10 Plex and preserve all the history associated with the various movies and TV shows I currently access on the 218 and 220 (eg, when I watch a tv program it gets marked as played and schedules the next show in the series.)? 2. Can I run Plex Media Servier on the 1520+ and still access the media on the 218 and 220 as I currently do on the Windows Plex? 3. What other "gotchas" do I need to be aware of? I feel confident I can install Plex Media Server on the 1520 but worry about the migration process. Many thanks, Harold

Not discounting @Rusty , it can be migrated, I just wonder how precious the played status is as it's pretty quick in Plex to apply tag changes to multiple sections. The initial tagging and artwork is a different matter: Plex handles this well just ensure you disable the periodic scanning and trashing of tags for missing files. I guess you are using the DS218+ and DS220+ as basic network storage and then mounting their shares on the device running PMS. You do know that you can run PMS on all these NAS and within your Plex account/Plex players they will be visible with their own libraries? It seems good to have everything under one PMS instance but you could also hive off media types to different servers. I'm just not sure why you have it like you do, it was one reason I migrated from media serving on a DS218+ with USB/eSata drives (media on mixture of internal and external devices) to the DS1520+ (all internal). I have several plex servers and all are pulling content off a 3rd big NAS that has massive storage capacity compared to plex servers running off SSD arrays. S

Thanks for all your comments. Not being a guru with Plex, some of the suggestions will require me to do more digging/learning. So, as an alternative process in my learning curve I have several more questions: 1. How/where does Plex store/keep track of the various videos that have been watched or in the process of being watched? Is this information kept as part of a Plex database? Can this info ultimately be migrated from the Windows installation to the 1520 (I suspect this may have been answered above)? 2. Does Plex Media Server store/modify the video content itself? 3. Can I create a Plex Media Server installation on my 1520 and view the same content I serve on my Windows Plex Media Server on my Windows 10 PC (not simultaneously) without changing the way Plex operates on the Windows 10 installation? This would allow me to "play" with the 1520 installation w/o disturbing my Windows installation as I learn more. As you can see, I have a lot to learn. Thanks again, Harold Rusty

Correct

It can. Its part of the migration process (link above)

Doesn't modify the actual files, but it will add new content as needed (like extras)

Yes, you can. I run it like that. Multiple Plex servers, towards the same source of content. S

I recommend granting Plex read-only rights to your media folders. Metadata is stored elsewhere. S

Morning All, Well, unfortunately, I'm back again. This 78-year-old coote is having difficulty figuring out how to access one of my Synology NAS with another NAS. I have spent considerable time researching and trying various methods (all this has to do with using Plex installed on one NAS and accessing media on another NAS...all on the same network via ethernet.) I finally found instructions on the Synology website directing me on how to do it. Unfortunately, it does not work for me. Here is what I did (and the results): 1. First try (on the NAS with Plex installed: File Station>home>tools>mount remote folder>CIFS value entered in folder slot: \\192.168.1.150\volume1\homes\hdbsynology220\Drive\Backup\HTPC-FAST\D\A-J\ (account name and password for remote NAS also entered correctly and the folder entered on Plex NAS also entered correctly...I guess). Resulting Error: Failed to connect to the remote folder. Please make sure the remote server is accessible via CIFS protocol. 2. Second try: same results and error message when I selected NFS as file type. So, my questions: What am I doing wrong and/or what file type should I be using and/or ???? Thanks for your help! Try and eliminate the volume1 element and just use the IP address and the exact path towards that user account folder. So instead of using the homes folder, try this: \\192.168.1.150\home\hdbsynology220\Drive\Backup\HTPC-FAST\D\A-J\ So target the home folder of the account (guessing it's called hdbsynology220) and then the rest of the path. Rusty, Many thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it still does not like either the CIFS or NFS file type (I get the same error message as above). Do you know what file type I should use...or am I not using the correct approach? Rusty

In this case cifs is ok. Are you sure you can reach that destination in general? What if you make it shorter and end with \Backup folder in your path? S

Rusty, thanks for the advice. I tried various combinations as you suggested...no workee! I suspect there is something I am not setting on the files/folders on the NAS that contains my media. Unfortunately, I have to sign off for today. Thanks again, Harold Coop777

Coop777, Thanks for the suggestion. I checked and both NAS had all ports firewall protected. I then disabled the firewalls on both NAS and tried to connect...still getting the same error message. Harold Coop777

Coop777, Here is my network configuration. 1. Here are some of my 18 devices of various types (laptop, workstation, iPads, iPhones, Smart TV, Security System, Internet phones, 3 Synology NAS, router, 2-16 port switches, 2 Kindles, etc) 2. Here is the simplified network configuration illustrating just placement of the Synology NAS
  • Hitron Modem/Router, model coda-4589 (supplied by service provider), set to pass through so only used as modem, connects to following Linksys Router
  • Linksys MX5300 Mesh Router (provides network IP addresses) connects to following 16 port switch
  • Linksys LGS116 switch (16 -1gb ports) connects to another switch 16 port switch below
  • Linksys LGS116 switch
  • All 3 Synology NAS are connected to Linksys LGS116 (#4 above)
  • All devices above are hardwired via ethernet cables
  • All above devices support 1gb speed
  • All devices on my network (both ethernet and WIFI) have fixed IP addresses set in the MX5300 router’s configuration table.
Hope this helps as opposed to creating confusion. Harold Rusty

My guess is this is not an HW problem, but rather a simple sw/dsm problem. Can you try and use a simple folder in the root of your volume1 and connect to it using File Station (same as above) \\192.168.1.150\volume1\test_folder Just to eliminate the long path first and to establish that you do have network visibility from one NAS to the other S

Rusty, Thanks for your suggestion. I now have success...somewhat. I am now able to mount files from the NAS holding the media to the NAS running Plex. On the Plex NAS, it shows files as mounted from the media NAS. I can click on the mounted remote folder and it shows the various media on the remote NAS. When I assign the folder with the media on Plex, it seems to locate it properly, but it shows up empty on Plex. I have scanned the library but still nothing. I can download the media from the Plex NAS to my hard drive and double-click the file and it plays properly. On the Plex NAS, I assigned the remote folder to a folder (IMAX Movies) I created under a shared folder (Plex Media) I created. The Plex Media folder is on the same level as the shared folder "PlexMediaServer" (ie, the Plex Media folder is not inside the PlexMediaServer folder). What am I now doing wrong? Any suggestions? Thanks, Harold P.S. I really appreciate your help!
